If ever there was a perfect time for a team to have a bye week, it came last week for Marblehead as the Magicians had time to regroup following a cataclysmic collapse against Newburyport.Whatever Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff told his team in the 13 days after the loss worked as the Magicians stuffed Gloucester all night and thanks to 178 yards and three Will Quigley touchdowns, left Newell Stadium with a 22-6 win on Friday.”We really needed the extra days to get over that loss,” Rudloff said. “And it turned out we had our best two weeks of practice all year.”Marblehead (4-2, 1-0 NEC/CAL Tier 2) had a miniscule 2-0 lead after one quarter on a safety before Gloucester’s (0-6, 0-1 NEC/CAL Tier 2) Kyle Lucido scored on a 26-yard screen pass for a 6-2 lead.Quigley, though, put the Magicians back ahead for good with an 11-yard touchdown run late in the first half for a 9-6 Marblehead lead.”Will really ran hard and the line did a nice job up front blocking for us,” Rudloff said.Neither team scored in the third before Quigley’s nine-yard run midway through the fourth upped the lead to 16-6. Phil Coughlin picked off Lenny Taormina on the next drive and Quigley paid it off with a six-yard run to close the scoring.”It was a really nice way for us to start the league schedule,” Rudloff said. “I feel good about where we are as a team right now.”Beverly 47, Danvers 0At Dr. Deering Stadium in Danvers, senior Kenny Pierce was a one-man wrecking crew for the Panthers, rushing for over 250 yards and notching his second five-touchdown game of the season.The Panthers, now 5-2 and 1-0 in NEC/CAL Tier 2 play, got off to an auspicious beginning as Pierce dashed 95 yards on their first snap of the night. He made it 14-0 with an 18-yard run and then 21-0 early in the second on a 32-yard Statue of Liberty play.Brendan Flaherty’s 44-yard touchdown reception late in the half made it 27-0 Beverly at halftime. Pierce was back at it in the third quarter, scoring from 46 and 53 yards, before Joe Kozlowski capped the scoring in the fourth period.Masconomet 35, Peabody 9At Topsfield, the Tanners (5-3, 0-2 NEC/CAL Tier 1) had no answer for Masco quarterback Ben Panunzio’s four-touchdown performance. The Chieftains signal caller ran for two scores and threw two others as Masco raced out to a 35-0 lead.Peabody’s lone touchdown came on a 12-yard Jason Hiou run. The Tanners added a safety late in the game.Fenwick 35, Williams 0At Donaldson Field in Peabody, quarterback Fran Hannon threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns to Mike Dainis, who had 216 receiving yards, as the Crusaders picked up their second win.Lynn native Rufus Rushins had a pair of touchdowns, including a 63-yard fumble return score.
