Item Staff ReportCOLUMBUS, Ohio – A federal jury has convicted a Lynn man of a heist of a Brink’s armored car vault in Ohio.No sentencing date was set for 47-year-old Sean Murphy, who faces up to 25 years in prison, according to a report from The Associated Press.A federal jury on Wednesday convicted Murphy, allegedly the leader of a gang law enforcement officials have dubbed the “Lynn Breakers,” of four charges related to the Jan. 18, 2009 Columbus break-in.Prosecutors say Murphy was the mastermind of a plan to steal millions by cutting holes in the warehouse roof.Investigators pegged the loss at $2.7 million, including money that burned when a torch ignited money in the vault. The jury found Murphy guilty of conspiracy to transport stolen goods, traveling in interstate commerce with intent to promote unlawful activity and interstate transportation of stolen property. Two co-defendants, both of Lynn, Joseph M. Morgan, 29, and Robert Doucette, 42, pleaded guilty in April.Murphy and his cohorts, including Morgan, were charged in early 2009 after 27 New York Giants Super Bowl rings were stolen from an Attleboro business in June of 2008 and found inside a safe deposit box at Eastern Bank in Cliftondale Square in Saugus. The rings, worth about $6,400 each, were part of a $2.5 million heist from the E.A. Dion jewelry manufacturing company.According to Item records, Murphy had been arrested previously for a bevy of crimes including armed robbery, burglary and armored car robbery.Material from The Associated Press and the Item staff was used in this report.
