SWAMPSCOTT – Selectmen voted to accept Town Administrator Andrew Maylor’s resignation effective Dec. 23, agreeing that the news was “bittersweet.””I’m certainly excited about the new position,” Maylor told the selectmen at their Wednesday night meeting. “But from a personal experience it’s going to be tough to get up and leave great relationships.”On Oct. 17, Maylor accepted a job as Town Manager in North Andover, citing his goal to work in a larger community with a bigger budget and staff to manage and ending his nine-year tenure in Swampscott.Maylor told selectmen he was accelerating the budget process in anticipation of his departure. He also said earlier that day he hoped to begin projects such as improving Blocksidge Field, hiring a contractor for the police station and repairing the wastewater pumping station before his departure. The town will meanwhile form a committee to find Maylor’s replacement – although Selectman Barry Greenfield sought permission to ask Marblehead or Nahant – who are currently or soon will be seeking a town administrator – whether they would be willing to share the position. Selectmen noted it would require a Charter change and permission of the state legislature. But as Chair Matt Strauss said, “there’s nothing wrong with reaching out.””I’m sure it will be a brief conversation,” Greenfield replied.Cyrus Moulton can be reached at [email protected].
