Football: Winthrop keeps the pressure on

Matthew Roy

October 29, 2011 by Matthew Roy

The Winthrop football team took its lumps a year ago. But that experience is beginning to pay huge dividends for the Vikings and coach Sean Driscoll.Jordan Corbett-Frank’s three-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion in overtime helped give the Vikings a 14-12 win at Miller Field against Amesbury.”We’re on a little run right now,” Driscoll said. “We’re winning games with character. We seem to be finding a way to get it done in the end.”The Indians had a 6-0 lead in the third quarter before James Barker hit Jake McKinnon for a 15-yard touchdown. The PAT was no good.In overtime, Amesbury won the toss and elected to go on defense. It took two plays for the Vikes (5-3, 2-0 NEC/CAL Tier 3) to strike on Corbett-Frank’s three yard run.The Indians responded with a touchdown in only two plays but the conversion pass was no good to seal the win.Catholic Memorial 26, St. John’s 7At CM, Penn State-bound Armani Reeves scored two touchdowns, one on a 72-yard punt return, as the Eagles fell to 3-4.Reeves got the scoring started with a 35-yard touchdown run that came off a Prep fumble in the first quarter. But John Thomas ran for 71 yards to tie the score for The Prep, but it was all CM after that. With under a minute to go in the half, Reeves returned his punt to make it 14-7, and CM got second-half scores from A.J. Doyle (1-yard run) and on a 20-yard pass from Doyle to Brandon Hammel.No. Andover 34, Revere 6At Revere, the Patriots (5-3) had a tough outing against the Scarlet Knights, who took a 28-0 lead into halftime. Revere threatened early when Kyle Gotham caught a 30 yard touchdown pass from Joe Ritchie, but it was called back on a hold. The Patriots only touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a five-yard run by Drew Lauria (the conversion failed).”They (No. Andover) rand the ball down our throats,” Revere coach Lou Cicatelli said. “They’re very methodical ? For us it was a matter of not making a tackle.”Spellman 29, Fenwick 0At Brockton, the Crusaders (2-6, 1-1 CCL Large) hung tough against the iron of the CCL Large as the defense held the Cardinals in check for most of the first half. The game was scoreless through one quarter before Spellman ripped off 22 second quarter points.”We moved the ball but couldn’t punch it in,” Fenwick coach Dave Woods said. “They earned everything they got though. We played very well.”Will Clancy led the stellar defensive effort while Fran Hannon and Rufus Rushins had solid offensive games.
