NAHANT – The single case by the circulation desk is apparently not big enough for the talents of local librarians, as the staff of the Nahant Public Library will hold their first arts and crafts sale this Sunday to benefit the library friends.”We’re hoping somebody with big bucks will come in and buy it so we can have some good programs,” said Librarian and Jeweler Allison Twiss-O’Neill. “In order to do the better programs, we need more money.”Librarians Twiss-O’Neill and Irene Purdy – who does crochet – and Library Director and watercolor painter Dan deStefano are showcasing their talents from 2 to 5 p.m. this Sunday. The show was deStefano’s idea and the three will donate fifty percent of the proceeds of sales to benefit the Friends of the Nahant Public Library.Twiss-O’Neill runs Whitecap Creations jewelry in addition to shelving novels, and she said that she will be offering mostly new pieces for sale that feature amethyst, big pearls, lapis and garnet. She said she is getting more into custom work and this will be her first show of the season.DeStefano will donate watercolor paintings for sale.Samples of both his painting and Twiss-O’Neill’s jewelry are on display at the library for curious shoppers. But this is Purdy’s first show – although she said she has been crocheting since the age of five and showed some intricate lacework projects that she has been developing. She seemed a little nervous.”I usually just make stuff and force it on people for Christmas,” she joked. “I said that nobody’s going to buy my stuff ? why do they need a dustcatcher for underneath a dustcatcher?”Twiss-O’Neill disagreed.”Your doilies are gorgeous,” she said. “My mother framed the one with the flower you made.”Cyrus Moulton can be reached at [email protected].
