Addonizio leads Lynnfield boys soccer past Matignon in D3 North action

November 9, 2011 by Matthew Roy

LYNNFIELD – The Lynnfield boys soccer team has been nothing short of dominant in its first two games in the Division 3 North tournament. After blowing past Newburyport, 6-1, on Sunday in the first round, the Pioneers were nearly as prolific on Tuesday at Jordan Park against Matignon in the quarterfinals.Cape Ann League MVP Marco Addonizio had two goals and two assists as the second seeded Pioneers outshot the 10th seeded Warriors, 25-5, in the game and rolled to a 5-1 win and a date with No. 3 St. Mary’s on Thursday (7:45) at Manning Field in the semifinals.Click here for a photo gallery.”We had lots of opportunities and didn’t cash in early on,” Lynnfield coach Brent Munroe said. “But we had a lot of pressure on them and we played very well from the 15 minute mark on.”Lynnfield (17-3) swarmed in the Warrior half of the field almost right from the opening kick but rang three goalposts and had several other shots turned aside by Thomas Thompson. The perseverance eventually paid dividends as Jake Atkinson set up Addonizio in the box for a quick shot that sailed inside the left post in the 15th minute for a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers continued to hem Matignon in but were unable to add to the lead despite Jeff Knox and Conor Sullivan having point blank chances midway through the half. The sense, though, was the dam was dangerously close to breaking for the Warriors. And late in the half the roof did finally cave in.Addonizio sent a perfect through ball to a streaking Atkinson, who was able to rip a shot past Thompson with 6:29 left in the half to make it 2-0. Less than a minute later, defender Patrick Kearney sent another long ball down field. This time it was Addonizio running on to the pass and flicking a right footed shot inside the left post for a 3-0 gulf at the break.”We had a few guys who were trying to make the big play when the simple one was what would have been better,” Munroe said. “Once we settled down and started doing that, we found our groove.”Lynnfield nearly extended the lead in the first moments of the second half but George Levantakos belted a shot off the crossbar. It stayed 3-0 until midway through the half when Addonizio fed Mike DeMirchan for a rocket and a 4-0 lead.Matignon got on the board moments later when John Camara took advantage of a defensive breakdown. Levantakos would complete the scoring 16 seconds later for Lynnfield.
