Correggio triumphs after Revere recount

Sara Brown

December 2, 2011 by Sara Brown

REVERE – Councilor at large John R. Correggio will remain on the Revere City Council for the next term. A recount finished Thursday evening determined that Correggio beat out Steven Morabito by 3 votes. In early November, Morabito was believed to have beaten out Correggio for the fifth at-large spot on the council by 10 votes.?It was my supporters who urged me to file for a recount,” Correggio said to the Item Thursday night. “I am thankful for all of them.”The recount took two and a half days to complete. “It was quite an ordeal,” Correggio said. “It was very time consuming.”The Revere Election Commission spent that time going through each ballot by hand. “Some of them were marked very lightly and the machine didn?t pick them up but you could tell by hand,” Correggio said.In the end, Correggio earned 3,481 votes while Morabito only garnered 3,478 votes.?It was a close election. I did the best that I could and, in the end, I lost the recount by a razor thin margin of three votes,” Morabito said. “I am thankful to all who have supported me throughout this past election.”Correggio also had kind things to say about Morabito. “He ran a great campaign and he has always been a gentleman,” Correggio said. “I look forward to working with him in the future.”The councilor at large is now looking ahead to the future. “I am going to continue to work hard and pay attention to the neighborhoods and do the right thing,” Correggio said. “I look forward to working with the new city councilors Jessica Giannino and Brian Arrigio as well as the new mayor, Dan Rizzo.”Sara Brown can be reached at [email protected].
