LYNN – Lynn Classical High School is opening its doors tonight to eighth graders and their families to highlight the school as an option among many for incoming freshmen.School officials will provide tours of the building and potential students can meet with staff and teachers. Current students’ art projects, music and videos will be displayed in the cafeteria. Tonight is also an open house for current students.Lynn Classical principal Gene Constantino said area schools try to engage potential students this time of year, as Lynn students can choose between the city’s public, private and vocational schools. He said the myriad of private schools in the Lynn area creates some competition between the public and private schools. Lynn Classical’s enrollment is up to its highest in the past decade, at about 1,400 students. But just a few years ago those numbers had dipped to 1,200 as more students chose to attend St. Mary’s High School, a private Catholic school in Lynn.”We know whatever high school they pick in Lynn, they’re going to be making a good choice,” he said. “But we feel a public education in Lynn is as good as any.”Lynn Classical High School’s “Night of Excellence” Open House will be held 6-8 p.m. Dec. 5 at the school, 235 O’Callaghan Way.
