Mom battling breast cancer counting on Item Santa this season

Item Staff ReportLYNN – As much fun as it may be to receive a gift there is no greater joy at Christmastime than giving to those less fortunate. This and every year, the Item Santa Fund relies on the generosity of Greater Lynn residents and businesses to contribute whatever amount they can to help ensure children in need get the Christmas they deserve.Maria, a single mother in Lynn, applied for help from Item Santa this year because she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and will be out of work while she recovers from surgery later this month. She worries she won’t be able to provide for her three children, including one infant, come Christmas.A record number of families in Greater Lynn have applied for help this year from the Item Santa Fund, nearly 1,400, and each year the program does all it can to provide gifts and vouchers for every child. Many in past years have donated in lieu of exchanging gifts with family members, or in memory of a friend or loved one, and donations are printed along with messages from donors each day in The Daily Item through the month of December. To make a donation, clip the coupon on Page A6 in today’s Item and mail it, along with your check, to The Item Salvation Army Santa, P.O. Box 951, Lynn, MA 01903. Walk-in donations are also gratefully accepted at The Daily Item, 38 Exchange St. (in Central Square), Lynn.
