SALEM – Bail for a Revere man, suspected of forging a prescription at a CVS Pharmacy in Beverly this summer, remains at $1,000 following his arraignment.Edward Michael DeStasio, 65, of 114 Reservoir Ave., pleaded innocent last Friday to uttering a false prescription, subsequent offense, before Salem Superior Court Judge Timothy Q. Feeley. The judge agreed to set the bail amount as previously established in Salem District Court in accordance with the proposal by Assistant District Attorney Michael Patten and defense lawyer Alice Jayne, and continued the case to Feb. 1.In the meantime, DeStasio remains free on bail until his case is resolved. On Aug. 18, DeStasio is accused of walking into the CVS on Dodge Street in Beverly and presenting a bad prescription for Percocet to the pharmacist. The pharmacist, realizing that DeStasio had been in the store before with other prescriptions for the same elderly woman, became suspicious and called authorities as DeStasio waited for the prescription to be filled. When police confronted DeStasio he reportedly told them he had received the phony prescription from a man he had met earlier in a bar.DeStasio has a prior conviction for a similar offense in 2008, according to court records.Because DeStasio has been deemed indigent, meaning he has no funds to hire his own attorney, the state will pay all costs, but he is obligated to pay $150 towards his legal representation.
