Girls Basketball: Tech opens with win at home

The Lynn Tech girls basketball team got its season off on the right foot Tuesday as Hattie Watkins had a game-high 25 points to lead the Tigers to a 47-36 win over Mystic Valley at the T. O’Connor Field House.”Our girls were tough and did everything we wanted as coaches,” Tech coach Kevin McDormand said.The Tigers had a 10-2 lead after a quarter and extended the lead to 22-10 at halftime. Tori Park also finished in double figures with 10 points while Zulmary Gonzalez added eight for Tech.Classical 34, Beverly 32At Classical, it wasn’t a high-scoring affair, but the Rams (1-0) got the job done. Monta Connolly had 12 points, a robust 15 rebounds, five steals and six assists to lead the way, Kristin Lauria had six points and 16 rebounds and Franki Galeazzi chipped in with six points.”It was nice to put one in the win column early, especially the way the kids did it, coming from behind in the fourth quarter,” Classical coach Tom Sawyer said.Becca Moriarty had 10 points for the Panthers (0-1).Fenwick 42, Spellman 25At Fenwick, Kate Lipka had 12 points and Alicia Villett added 11 as the Crusaders (2-0, 1-0 CCL Large) were in control throughout.Peabody 45, Salem 31At Peabody, the Tanners (1-0) led by five (23-18) at the half and by 10 after three in the season opener. Taylor Provost led Peabody with 10 points as nine different players got on the scoresheet.Amanda Matthews and Caroline Scacchi had eight each for Peabody.Swampscott 39, Winthrop 16At Swampscott, Ara Talcov had 11 points and Caroline Murphy added nine as the Big Blue rode a swarming defense to get a season-opening win. Swampscott led 10-6 after a quarter before extending the lead to 24-8 at the half.Lynnfield 51, Manchester-Essex 44At Manchester-Essex, Shannon LaMusta had a big night for the Pioneers with a team-high 15 points despite fouling out early in the fourth quarter. Kelsey Leblanc had nine points and a whopping 18 rebounds. Catherine Lawler had 14 points and 11 rebounds.Lynnfield is coming off a 10-11 season. The Pioneers qualified for the tournament, but lost to Triton in the opener.
