Roundup: Classical swimmers win first of the season

The Classical swimming team was led by the duo of Dhimo Ditri and Mac St. Ives, as the Rams defeated Revere 95-79 for their first win of the season at Classical Thursday night.Classical coach Denise Silva was happy with her team’s performance.”It was really a well swum meet by both teams. It’s always good to be on the winning end of a very competitive meet,” Silva said.Leading the charge for the Rams was the combination of Ditri and St. Ives. Ditri took first in the 200 free (2:29.00) and in the 100 butterfly (1:22.03). St. Ives took first in the 50 free (28.01) and in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.08). The other winners for Classical were: Alicia Worthylake, diving and Stephanie Gaglini, 500 free (8:33.94). The Rams took first in the 200 free relay (2:05.16) with the team of Eric Rondeau, Brian Nelson, Ditri and St. Ives. Rachael Thomas finished second in diving and Jon Dorson finished second in the 500 free for Classical. Classical is now 1-1.Salem 90, English 88At Salem, captain Matt Demirs led the Bulldogs. Demirs was the lone winner for English, in diving. English had eight-second place individual finishers. The second-place finishers were: Brandie Holland (diving); Mike Bruno (200 free, 100 free, 500 free); Matt Bruno (50 free); Frances Serwicki (100 butterfly, 100 back) and Demirs (200 free). English also finished second in the 200 medley relay. Dana Stevens had a strong performance in the 50 free (finished 3rd). English is now 0-1.Beverly 92, Peabody 83At Peabody, the Tanners’ Christine Shea qualified for states (100 breaststroke) and her sister Julie Shea qualified for states (100 back). Michelle Manfra took first in diving (177.05). Alex Guay took first in the 50 free and 100 free. Peabody is now 0-1.GIRLS BASKETBALLFenwick 37, Medford 32At Medford, Fenwick was down 18-14 at halftime. Fenwick outscored Medford 10-1 in the third, which propelled Fenwick to come out on top. Leading the way for Fenwick was the duo of Alicia Villet (12 points) and Kate Lipka (15 points). Villet and Lipka combined to score 27 of the 37 Fenwick points. Annette Ruggiero had a strong game on the defensive side (2 steals). Fenwick is now 3-0.WRESTLINGSt. John’s 55, St. John’s (S) 11At Shrewsbury, St. John’s had 12 winners to complete a strong team effort. Winners for St. John’s were: Lewis Bornstein (106); T.J Lemieux (120); Jared Costa (126); Mike Anderle (132); James Smith (138); Joel Aviles (145); V.J Mortillaro (152); Peter Locke (160); Ian Butterbrodt (182); James Ingemi (195); John Polansky (220) and Corey Jean-Jacques (285). St. John’s is now 3-1.Lynnfield 63, Georgetown 10At Lynnfield, the Pioneers recorded 11 wins. Winners for Lynnfield were: Eric Kerr (106); Matt Foss (115); Alex Pascucci (132); Richie Falcione (138); Travis Caulfield (145); John Elliott (152); Phil Bishop (160); John Klug (170); Bud Flaherty (182); Mike D’Amico (195) and Colin Arsenault (220). Lynnfield is now 4-0.BOYS TRACKBeverly 67, English 19At Beverly, the Bulldogs (0-1) had a first place from Alex Bonitto in the 600 (1:33.6) and Chris Birotte in the 2-mile (11:08). The Panthers (1-0) swept the high jump, led by Jay Richardson (5-8). Harry Brown won the shot put (40-2 1/2); Matt Handler, the 50 (6.0); Brendan Flaherty, the 300 (40 second); Michael Black, 1,000 (3:01.8) and Alex Greco, the mile (4:58.5). English’s Matt Blaney was second in the mile and Peter Mato, also from English, was second in the 1,000.Danvers 61, Classical 25At Beverly, the Rams (0-1) had four first-place finishes – George Clark in the high jump (5-6); Rudy Collymore, 50 (5.9); Kevine Kakou, 300 (41.4) and Perry Raymond, 2-mile (11:19.9). The Falcons (1-0) had firsts from Brian Hebert, mile (4:56.6); Javier Medina, 1,000 (3:03.3); Matt Hogan, 600 (1:42.8); Nick Calderone, 50 (7.8) and Joe Manson, shot put (46-1).GIRLS TRACKDanvers 63, Classical 23At Beverly, the Rams (0-1) had a couple of first-place finishes.
