LYNN – The Lynn Police Special Investigation Unit conducted two search warrants Sunday afternoon, making six arrests and seizing $15,000 in cash, along with laptops, fax machines and other equipment used by a local illegal gambling ring.Lt. Christopher Kelly said the SIU carried out search warrants around 2 p.m. Sunday at 876 Western Ave., the location of a store called Dollar and Video, and a home at 5 Crescent St. The SIU, the culmination of a months-long investigation led by Lt. Peter Holey.Kelly said gambling slips found at the store were taken in as evidence and led officers to believe the bets centered on sports teams.?The people submitting bets were actually coming to fill out sheets right in the store, and they were discovered and seized,” Kelly said. “There was reference on one of the slips that had a bunch of football teams, but that doesn?t mean it was all just football.”Televisions and fax machines allegedly used to monitor games were taken from both locations, as well as betting lines. Leap Maiy, of 4 S. Crescent St., and Bannard Chay, 45, of 65 Newhall St. were arrested for managing the gambling den, and Luis Barahona, 21, of 64 Hawthorne St.; Josue Francois, 23, of 600 Boston St.; Elisha Davis, 17, and Joshua Corbett, 22, of 58 Cottage St. #2L, were arrested for being present where gambling occurred.All are set to be arraigned in Lynn District Court Tuesday, according to court records.Taylor Provost can be reached at [email protected].
