December 20, 2011 by Thor Jourgensen

and Taylor Provost / The Daily ItemREVERE – Police hunted Monday morning for a man who robbed the East Boston Savings Bank and, according to initial reports, fled down Broadway to Route 107 and Saugus. The robbery in the bank?s 575 Broadway branch occurred shortly after 11 a.m., forcing branch managers to close the bank while police officers and detectives investigated the theft. The robber demanded cash from a teller and ran from the bank, according to police radio transmissions describing the robbery. Police could be heard searching for a silver Honda or Hyundai traveling in the direction of Saugus along 107.Another transmission described the robber wearing a gray sweatshirt with a Nike logo and noted the sweatshirt is similar to one worn by a suspect being sought for the Dec. 12 robbery of an Everett bank.Neil Patel manages a Subway sandwich franchise across the street from the Broadway bank and said he saw police cruisers converge on the branch.?There were a lot of cops. I didn?t know what was going on,” Patel said. The bank remained closed for more than an hour after the robbery. East Boston resident Camille Biancardi used the automatic teller machine in the bank foyer but did not see the “closed” sign on the branch?s main doors.?It?s really terrible. With the economy the way it is, people are really desperate,” she said.Revere resident Peter Marino said the East Boston Saving?s Broadway branch has been robbed before.Thor Jourgensen can be reached at [email protected] Provost can be reached at [email protected].
