Roundup: St. Mary’s boys edge Spellman

The St. Mary’s boys basketball team rode the back of Nick Gagliolo and Devin Thompson in a huge way on Monday at the Conigliaro Gymnasium.The two combined to score 58 of the Spartans’ 68 points as they upended Cardinal Spellman, 68-65.”Everyone knows as those two go, we go,” St. Mary’s coach Kevin Moran said. “They both played tremendous.”The Spartans (3-1, 2-0 Catholic Central League/Large) trailed 21-17 after a quarter but rallied to take a 36-31 lead at the half. Spellman shaved the lead back to a point after three as the teams began going back and forth.The lead was two with 11 seconds left when Gagliolo made one of two free throws. The Cardinals had a chance to tie as time expired but the shot clanged off the iron.Saugus 56, Amesbury 45At Amesbury, the Sachems (5-0) stayed red-hot as Max Soto led all scorers with 13 points. Curtis Casella added 12 as Saugus led 34-20 at halftime.Pope John 87, Maimonides 59At Everett, Lynn’s Malcolm Brown had a triple-double for the Tigers (3-0), finishing with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals.GIRLS BASKETBALLSt. Mary’s 55, Spellman 32At Brockton, the Spartans got the job done at both ends of the court. Jennie Mucciarone scored 20 points and Sharell Sanders was good for 14 points and eight assists. Ann Marie Idusuyi had 13 rebounds and six blocks to go with four points.”Defensively we played great from the opening tap,” coach Jeff Newhall said, adding he was also pleased with the balanced scoring.”Any time you go to Spellman and win, it’s a great night,” Newhall said.BOYS HOCKEYMarblehead 3, Newton North 3At the Fessendon School in Newton, Erik Powers scored with 35 seconds left to give the Headers (1-0-1) a point against the Division 1 Tigers.”It was a great point for us,” Marblehead coach Bob Jackson said. “They dominated the first period but we started to play better from the second period on.”Liam Gillis and Austin Haley also had goals while Ian Maag and Tyler Bates had two assists. Mike Harper made 27 saves in goal.GIRLS TRACKClassical 49, Salem 37At Lynn Tech, Rebecca Potter was a double winner for the Rams (1-1, 1-0), taking first place in the high jump (4-2) and in the 300 (48.0). The Rams, who are without their ace, Hulerie McGuffie, who tore her ACL in the Powder Puff football game, also had firsts from Adriana Raymond in the shot put (27-33/4); Saffi Bangura, 50 (6.4); Krista Cuozzo, 600 (2:00); Carla Altema, 50 hurdles; Allison Kurpiel, mile (6:53) and Kathy Perez, 2-mile (15:16.8). The relay was a barnburner with Salem winning 4:48.7 to 4:48.8.The Witches picked up a first from Khristina Corpuz in the 1,000 (3:41.4).Swampscott 58, Winthrop 28At Swampscott, Nancy Do was a double winner for the Big Blue (2-0) taking the 55 dash (7.4) and high jump. Melinda Wilson also picked up two wins, claiming the 600 (1:51) and shot put (28-11 1/4).Also taking wins were Vy Le in the 55 hurdles (9.5); Allison Grimes, 300 (48.6); Sarah Kelley, 1,000 (3:18.3); Tess Gorman, mile (6:06.5) and Emily Cerra, 2-mile (12:55.6).Saugus 52, English 32At Swampscott, the Sachems (1-0) had a double winner in Mary Dixon, who took the shot put (28-0) and 55 dash (7.5).Also winning for the Sachems were Breanna Evans in the high jump (4-4); Brittni Zeboski, 55 hurdles (10.9) and Giana Ross, 300 hurdles (52.9).English (0-1) got wins from Karina Ross in the 600 (2:09.2); Karissa Burton, 1,000 (4:18.8); Karla Ross, mile (6:49.7) and Taylor Holey, 2-mile (14:44.5).BOYS TRACKSwampscott 72, Winthrop 10At Swampscott, the Big Blue (1-0) won every event. Taking wins were Kevin Nguyen in the 55 hurdles (9.4); Zach Blonder, 55 dash (6.66); Peter Hale, mile (4:46); Erik Murphy, 300 (39.51); Ryan Kelley, 600 (2:52); Nick Hartmann, 2-mile (11:09); Matt Nardiello, 1,000 (2:52); Robert Seymour, shot put (40-10 1/2) and Nile Jones, high jump (5-1).Revere 44, Saugus 41At Swampscott, this one came right down to the end as the Patriots (1-0) came out on top.
