The Beverly boys pulled off an early-season shocker on Tuesday night at the Paul F. Cavanagh Field House as they shut down a high-powered Lynn English offense and Tyler Suggs hit a layup with 15 seconds left to help the Panthers pull off a 51-49 win.”It feels great,” Beverly coach Scott Lewis said. “We focused on stopping them as a group and the kids came in, worked and concentrated on defense.”Beverly (2-1) held the Bulldogs (2-1) to just 19 first-half points as the Panthers carried a seven-point lead into the break.”We didn’t come out and perform the way that I expect us to,” English coach Mike Carr said. “We came out flat and missed a ton of layups.”The Bulldogs fought back and cut the lead to four (40-36) after three periods, and then took the lead in the fourth quarter before the Panthers had the final answer.Chris Keaton was outstanding for Beverly, leading the way with 19 points and six steals. Zach Zigelbaum added 12 points and 13 rebounds. Keandre Stanton led all scorers with 21 for the Bulldogs.”We hadn’t beaten them in five years,” Lewis said.Classical 62, Peabody 54 (OT)At Peabody, Moise Builou’s layup with less than a second left in regulation sent the game to overtime, where the Rams (2-2) outscored the host Tanners (2-1), 13-5.”Classical did a good job of capitalizing on our mistakes,” Peabody coach Thad Broughton said. “Give them a lot of credit.”Uche Nwokeji led the Rams with 15 points and Eraldo Custodio added 12. The Tanners got a game-high 24 from Mike Gould and 12 from Steve Girolamo.Tech 53, Minuteman 51At the T. O’Connor Field House in Lynn, the Tigers (1-3) rode an outstanding effort from Michael Duarte, who led all scorers with 29 points. Tech led 28-19 at halftime before the Mustangs fought back to tie things at 39-39 after three periods.The teams went back and forth over the final eight minutes with Tech converting from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.Winthrop 48, Marblehead 46At Marblehead, Quinton Dale’s jumper with two seconds left was the difference as the 3-0 Vikings rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to take the win. Dale finished with 12 rebounds and seven blocks as well.Marblehead (0-3) got 16 points from Brian Gellert and 11 by Scott Temme.Swampscott 52, Gloucester 44At Gloucester, the Big Blue (1-2) were without three starters because of injury but Val Temin had 19 points and A.J. Baker added 11.”We played terrific defensively. We got a lot of easy hoops in transition,” Swampscott coach Justin Fucile said.Salem 74, Revere 51At Salem, Marvin Baez had 27 points and Chris Dunston added 16 as the Witches (1-2) led 43-25 at the half and never looked back.Williams 68, Fenwick 42At Braintree, Dom Luoni had 18 points in the loss for the Crusaders. Ben Maxnor had 10 rebounds.Danvers 70, Saugus 32At Saugus, the Falcons (4-0) continue to roll with Saugus, playing its third game in four days, the latest victim. Nick Bates had 17 points and 12 rebounds and George Merry, 14 points and eight rebounds for Danvers. Curtis Casella had six points for the Sachems.
