Boys Hockey: Danvers edges Saugus

In a boys hockey game highlighted by numerous multiple-point efforts, host Danvers was able to hold off Saugus 5-4 at Rockett Arena in Salem on Wednesday.J.D. Hodgkins (2 goals, assist) scored twice in the second for Danvers (2-1), who also got a tally from Joe Calragno. Saugus forward Guy Capillo kept things close with two goals of his own, the second of which tied things at 4 at 3:10 of the third. Ryan Cassidy’s goal at 5:38 of the third proved to be the game winner.Things started off well for Saugus (1-1-1) who got two first period goals from Saige Tait less than ten minutes in. The Falcons closed to within one at 14:48 on a goal from A.J. Couto (goal, assist). Joe Strangie finished with four assists for the Falcons.”We’re struggling right now and we’re lucky to be where we are record-wise,” said Saugus coach Jeff Natalucci. “We’re being outworked badly the past couple games and that’s something we usually succeed in.”The Sachems are hoping for a better effort on Tuesday with the start of the annual Christmas tournament at Kasabuski Arena in Saugus.Gloucester 3, Beverly 1At Gloucester, Johnny Interrante’s second period goal proved to be the game winner as the Fishermen (1-2) hung on to beat the Panthers (1-1). Beverly’s Colby Irving tied things at one just 41 seconds into the second period before the hosts pulled away with two unanswered goals.”Gloucester looked strong tonight,” said Beverly coach Bob Gilligan. “We’11 see them again and hopefully get a better result.”Swampscott 5, Lynn 1Trevor Massey’s hat trick helped propel the host Big Blue to victory against the Jets at Rockett Arena in Salem. Nunzio Morretti opened the scoring at 1:27 of the first period before Massey’s first goal at 5:38.Gino Cresta (goal, assist) scored 48 seconds into the third period to open up a 3-0 lead for Swampscott. Lynn’s Steve Tettavitch scored at 10:51 of the third before Massey netted two goals in the final five minutes.Arlington Catholic 5, Bishop Fenwick 0Facing a tough early season schedule is never easy and it showed as the Crusaders were blanked by the host Cougars. Fenwick had dropped the previous two games to tough opponents in St. Mary’s (Lynn) and Austin Prep. The road gets no smoother as Malden Catholic is up next on Tuesday in Saugus.Winthrop 5, Peabody 1At Larsen Rink, senior Chris Leblanc is off to a red-hot start for the Vikings (1-1-1). His hat trick last night gave him six goals and three assists for the season.”He’s a difference maker out there,” Winthrop coach Dale Dunbar said.Winthrop also had a goal from Chris Cage, who tied the game at 1-1, and Dan Eruzione, who had a goal and two assists. Freshman Ray Feeley was in net.The Tanners (1-2) took an early 1-0 lead when Anthony Robinson scored midway through the first period. Eric Costa had the assist.Lynnfield 5, Masco 2At McVann-O’Keefe Rink, Greg Meininger had a hat trick for the Pioneers (2-1 overall, 2-1 Cape Ann League). Alex Ganter and Dylan Costa took care of the rest of the scoring while Joe Bassi (20 saves) shut the door in net.Marblehead 5, Salem 1At Rockett Arena, the Magicians defeated Salem, 5-1.
