St. Mary’s girls hockey loses to Hingham

December 22, 2011 by Matthew Roy

LYNN – Jane Freda is becoming a thorn in the side of the St. Mary’s girls hockey team.It was the junior forward who scored the overtime goal last winter to stop the Spartans’ remarkable streak of 100 games without a loss and propel her Hingham team to a Division 1 state title. On Wednesday at Connery Rink, she and her Harborwomen teammates were at it again.Freda broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period with her second goal of the game and then assisted on Sarah Schwenzfeier’s insurance goal later on as Hingham bested the Spartans, 3-1, in front of a packed house.Click here for a photo gallery.”That’s a good team over there,” Hingham coach Tom Findlay said. “And they have a lot of talented players. We came out and were resilient. This team will play all three periods and that’s nice to see.”The Spartans (2-2) showed vast improvement from Saturday’s 5-0 loss at Woburn but saw Hingham come up with a couple of big plays in the final 15 minutes.”We missed some opportunities and you have to convert on those against good teams,” St. Mary’s coach Frank Pagliuca said. “We played much better than Saturday, but we didn’t get the result we desired.”It was a very even game through much of the first period with Freda providing the only goal at 7:09 when she picked up an Emily Falvey pass and beat Lauren Skinnion blocker side.Hingham freshman goalie Taylor Walsh stoned prolific scorer Alison Butler later in the period to keep it 1-0 after one.The Spartans charged back early in the second when Hannah Quin’s shot from the right point found its way through traffic and past Walsh to tie the game.Skinnion then was called on to make several critical saves, none bigger then her point blank stop on Hannah Falvey, keeping the game tied after two.”Lauren kept us in the game,” Pagliuca said.Freda, however, would solve Skinnion again early in the third when she picked up an Alexandria Gong rebound and beat the Spartan netminder.Schwenzfeier then provided the insurance goal with 3:55 left as the Harborwomen put the game away.
