Girls Basketball: English stays unbeaten, blows past Peabody

The English girls basketball team came in to its game with Peabody on Friday committed to shutting down the Tanners’ ability to score in the paint and get to the boards.Mission accomplished.Led by 19 points from Catherine Stinson and 13 by Deidre Newson, the Bulldogs moved to 4-0 in Northeastern Conference North play with a commanding 53-30 win at Veterans Memorial Field House.”We came out on fire,” English coach Fred Hogan said. “That was our best defensive intensity of the year.”English led 20-3 after a quarter and 25-11 at halftime as they stonewalled the Tanners attempts to get the ball to the post.”We played good for maybe 15 minutes, but it’s a 32 minute game,” Peabody coach Jane Heil said. “We had no answers for them and they deserved to win.”Salem 45 Lynn Classical 36At Salem, Alix Bryant’s 21 points were enough for the Witches as they hung on to defeat the visiting Rams (1-3). Monta Connolly scored 16 points for Classical while teammate Kristin Lauria pulled down 17 rebounds in the losing effort.Revere 57, Beverly 37At Revere, the Patriots (3-1) won their third in a row as Caitlin Caramello led all scorers with 20 points and Gena Restiano added 14 points and six steals.Revere led by nine after a quarter and at halftime before exploding to a 22-point lead in the third.”We were able to buckle down on defense and brought a little more intensity after halftime,” Revere coach Katelyn Leonard said.Gloucester 56, Marblehead 38At Gloucester, the Magicians were led by Emily Freedland with 16 points. Hannah Cain had 20 the Fishermen and Audry Knowlton chipped in with 19.
