Basketball: Hiou, Peabody defeat Fenwick

The Peabody boys basketball team had a one-man wrecking crew in Jason Hiou, as Hiou led Peabody over Fenwick 62-35 at Fenwick Tuesday night.”Jason was everywhere tonight,” Tanners coach Thad Broughton said. “We put a lot of responsibility on his shoulders as point guard and he responded with a huge game today.”Peabody’s (3-2) Hiou ended up with a game-high 30 points.For Fenwick, Ben Maxner had a strong game (13 pts., 10 rebounds, 5 blocks). Fenwick is 0-3.BABC Christmas TournamentSt. John’s 69, New Mission 60At Chelsea, St. John’s jumped out to an 18-2 lead after the first quarter. St. John’s was led by Mike Carbone (18 pts.). Marcos Echeverria played a solid game at point guard. St. John’s remains undefeated at 4-0.Malden 55, Winthrop 51At Malden, the Vikings dug themselves a 31-21 deficit at the half. Winthrop cut the deficit to two with 30 seconds left, but Malden hit a couple free throws to ice the game. Leading Winthrop was Quinton Dale (15 pts., 10 rebounds). Joe D’Amore chipped in with 11 points.GIRLS BASKETBALLMalden TournamentSwampscott 53, Malden 19At Malden, Swampscott led 20-10 at the half. Swampscott completely dominated the second half by outscoring Malden 33-9. Swampscott coach Jack Hughes was very happy with his team’s performance.”My team started a little slow out of the gate but I was very impressed with our second half performance. Every adjustment that was made from the first half to the second half couldn’t have worked out any better because of my team’s great execution on offense and defense,” Hughes said.Leading the way for Swampscott was Caroline Murphy (17 pts., 7 rebounds). Alexa Goldman also helped out (10 pts., 4 steals). Swampscott (4-0) will play Bedford Wednesday in the championship of the Malden tournament.
