Lynn falls to Everett in Christmas Tournament

December 29, 2011 by Matt Fraser

LYNN – The Lynn Jets boys hockey team came out on the losing end, 1-0, of an eight-round shootout to Everett (4-1) on Wednesday night at Connery Rink in the championship game of the Lynn Christmas Tournament. The game ended in a 0-0 deadlock, meaning both teams earned points, but a champion had to be crowned. Everett’s Cody Nadeau scored the winning goal of the shootout, beating Jets goalie Mike Gately, who stood on his head the entire night.”Mike did all we could have asked for in the shootout and played a great game the whole way through,” said Lynn coach Joe Conlon. “Everett’s goalie (Vinny Sottosanti) played amazingly all game as well.”In what could be called a defensive chess match, Lynn couldn’t find a way to beat Sottosanti, who finished with 21 saves. Not to be outdone, Gately stopped all 25 shots he saw in regulation time.Everett, who had a noticeable size advantage, took it to the Jets physically and Conlon believed it to play a factor in the outcome of the game.”Everett was the more physical team and I think that hurt us tonight,” he said. “They were stronger on the puck and we had some trouble with their physical style.”The good news is that the Jets do pick up a point with the regulation tie, a fact that wasn’t overlooked by the Jets coach.”We came away with three points in the two-day tournament, which isn’t a bad thing,” he said. “We’re 2-2-1 after December and this next month is going to dictate where we go this year.”Salem 3, Northeast 1In the consolation game, Brian Shaw’s two goals were enough to propel the Witches (1-5) to a victory over the Golden Knights (0-5). Paule DiMarino added an empty netter as time expired.
