Boys Basketball: Top-ranked Eagles stunned on road by B.C. High

The St. John’s Prep basketball team picked the wrong time to lose its shooting touch on Tuesday at McNeise Pavilion in Dorchester.With B.C. High playing a zone defense that was daring the Prep to fire away from the perimeter, the Eagles couldn’t take advantage and the host Eagles were able to pull the upset over the top-ranked team in Eastern Mass., 53-47.”They did a good job in their zone defense and we didn’t do a real good job of attacking it,” St. John’s coach Sean Connolly said.The Prep (5-1) trailed 10-7 after a quarter but cut the lead to two at the half (22-20). BC then put together a solid third period to push the lead back out to six heading into the final eight minutes.The Eagles eventually got the lead to eight before St. John’s closed to within a basket but couldn’t get all the way back. Steve Haladyna had 15 to lead the Prep while Owen Marchetti had 11 and Freddie Shove finished with 10.Gr. Lowell 67, Tech 53At Lowell, the Tigers (1-6) got 16 points from Michael Duarte but it wasn’t enough to knock off the Gryphons.Revere 54, Peabody 45At Revere, the Patriots (2-5) finally put together a full 32 minutes according to coach Rick Hayes and with it knocked off a red-hot Peabody team.”It was nice to see us play a full game,” Hayes said. “We’ve put together 15 or 20 good minutes but not four quarters.”Alex Urenas was the ringleader for the Pats, finishing with a team-high 20 points. Mike Dreeszen added 13. Peabody was led by 20 from Steve Girolamo and an 11-point, 14-rebound effort from Mike Gould.Lynnfield 63, No. Reading 54At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (4-2) got 22 points, including six 3-pointers, from Nico Verano to knock off the rival Hornets. Steve Carangelo added 15 points and Conor Sullivan finished with 12.Danvers 70, Gloucester 41At Danvers, the Falcons (5-1) blasted out to an astounding 26-1 lead after a quarter and were never challenged from there. Nick Bates led Danvers with 13 points while Eric Martin had eight.Salem 64, Beverly 57At Beverly, the Witches (3-2) trailed by a point entering the final period but outscored the hosts 24-16 to score the come-from-behind win.Christian Dunston led all scorers with 21 points for Salem. Marvin Baez chipped in 16. Beverly was led by 16 from Cam Rogers and 13 by Zach Zigelbaum.
