The St. Mary’s boys hockey team got the jump on Matignon with three first period goals and never looked back in a 5-2 win Wednesday at Connery Rink.The Spartans (6-1-1), 3-0 Catholic Central League) didn’t waste any time getting on the board. Tim Aylward scored 1:38 into the game with Cam O’Neil and Frank Moreschi getting the assists. Five minutes later, Jarrod Fitzpatrick made it 2-0 with Tom Braswell and Nikko Markham providing the assists. Jordan Manthorne staked the Spartans to a 3-0 lead 12:14 into the period with Bobby Mullins assisting.The lead ballooned to 4-0 thanks to an Andrew Markham goal 6:46 into the second period (Mullins and Brendan Mageary assisted). Matignon (2-4) finally made a little headway when Ricky Canales scored late in the second. Matignon cut the lead to 4-2 on another Canales goal early in the final period, but the Spartans pulled away for good on a goal by O’Neill (Ryan Madden assist) with 4:07 remaining in the game. Bailey MacBurnie and Steve Poliskey split the game in net.Saugus 5, Peabody 1At Peabody, Nick Taylor’s 2 goals and assist led the way as the Sachems (3-3-1) downed the Tanners. Chris Sanderson, Saige Tait, and Drew Oxley were the other goal scorers for Saugus, who got two assists from Guy Capillo. Nick Salalayko scored the lone Peabody goal.Winthrop 2, Beverly 0At Salem State, Mitchell Paulson’s goal at 4:15 of the third period was enough, as the Vikings (3-2-2) beat the Panthers (3-3-1). Chris LeBlanc scored the second goal shortly after while goalie Steve Waites held on for the shutout.Austin Prep 6, Bishop Fenwick 0At Austin, Scott Corcoran netted a hat trick as the Cougars routed Fenwick. Nolan Vessey (4 assists) and Ryan Quinn (goal, assist) also turned in multiple-point efforts while Nick Luise turned aside 21 shots for the shutout.B.C. High 5, St. John’s 3An Eagles goal with 1:10 remaining proved the difference as B.C. High (5-0) squeaked past The Prep.
