Truck slams into Lynn homes

Sara Brown

January 10, 2012 by Sara Brown

LYNN – Gizelle Mayne was on her way home after picking up her child from school when she got a phone call from her best friend on Monday afternoon.?She called to tell me that I wasn?t going to be able to get on my street,” Mayne said. “I had no idea what she was talking about.”When she finally got home she was greeted with the sight of many police cars and fire trucks – and a Ryder truck in her neighbor?s house.A Ryder truck had just crashed into two Lynn homes at 287 and 289 Eastern Ave. earlier Monday afternoon. Details as to why the driver lost control of the vehicle remain unknown but the driver was seen leaving the scene in an ambulance. The homeowners could not be reached.?The truck crashed through 287 and went through their porch then crashed into 289,” Lynn Inspectional Services Chief Michael Donovan said to the Item.Donovan said that the Ryder truck crashed through 287?s porch and then into 289?s foundation of the basement, knocking over an oil tank and causing a “little spillage.”He said nobody at home was hurt.?Both homeowners will be back in their houses tonight,” Donovan said. “The porch is being sealed off and the oil is being cleaned up so it is safe for them to return home.”Donovan said he did not know the cost of the damage.Mayne, who lives at 280 Eastern Ave., was disturbed by what she had seen. “This is really scary,” Mayne said. “I mean, how does this happen?”Many curious neighbors could be seen on the street in shock of what had happened and some even taking photos with their cell phones. One of those curious neighbors was Jenny Mak. “I am surprised the driver is not dead,” Mak said. “I?ve never seen anything like this.”Mak was at home down the street when her friend came over to tell her what had just happened. “She told me that a truck had just crashed into the home,” Mak. “So, I came over here to check it out.”The Lynner suspects that the driver was texting while driving. “I bet they were texting and just lost control of the car,” Mak said. “How else does something like that happen?”Mayne just hoped for everyone to be safe and unharmed. “I don?t know how something like this happens but you just have to hope no one is injured or hurt.”Sara Brown can be reached at [email protected].
