Girls Hoop: Sachems rally to defeat Tanners

The Saugus High girls basketball team got a strong fourth-quarter rally to defeat Peabody 42-41 at Saugus Tuesday night.Saugus coach Jim Perry was ecstatic with his team’s effort.”My team really played great, especially down the stretch. Peabody is a good team, and for my team to be down the whole game and still find a way to win, speaks volumes about my team tonight,” Perry said.The key to the Sachem comeback was defense in the fourth quarter. Saugus held Peabody to five points in the final frame. Leading the way for Saugus (5-5) was sophomore Norma Waggett (18 pts, 5 rebounds, 4 blocks). Alyssa Furtado also helped out (11 pts, 15 rebounds). Gabby Cogliano chipped in as well (9 pts, 7 rebounds).For Peabody, Carolyn Scacchi led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Peabody is 4-4.PMA 43, Tech 39At Tech, Tech coach Kevin McDormand was very happy with his team’s performance.”My team really had the definition of a complete team effort. We were down for most of the game, but my team never gave up. Unfortunately, my team came up just short today,” McDormand said.Tech was down 30-24 going into the fourth quarter. Tech took its first lead with a minute left in the game on a layup from Hattie Watkins (19 pts). Tech secured a rebound and was up 37-36 with 10 seconds left. Tech was fouled immediately and missed the front end of a one-and-one. PMA was then fouled with six seconds left. PMA split the free throws to send the game into overtime, where Tech ran out of gas. Mimi Gonzales had a strong game for Tech on the defensive end. Tech is 2-8.Marblehead 44, Beverly 30At Marblehead, the Magicians trailed 12-4 after the first quarter. Marblehead dominated the game from that point on and outscored the Panthers 40-18 for the rest of the game. Leading the way for Marblehead were Emily Freedland (12 pts) and Kathryn Digiammarino (8 pts). Marblehead is now 5-3.Gloucester 45, Classical 29At Gloucester, “it was a take of two halves,” according to Classical coach Tom Sawyer.”The difference between the first half and the second half was effort,” Sawyer said.Leading the way for Classical was Alina Garrity, who had a strong game on the defensive end. Taylor Dumas played well, holding one of Gloucester’s strongest players, Heather Cain, to zero field goals made. Classical is 2-8.Matignon 45, Fenwick 43At Matignon, “It was too little, too late. If my team played like they did in the fourth quarter, we might have won today,” according to Fenwick coach Adam DeBaggis.Leading the way for Fenwick was Maura Doyle (11 pts, 7 rebounds). Alicia Villett chipped in for Fenwick (3 pts, 6 assists). Fenwick is now 5-3.Swampscott 48, Revere 37At Swampscott, the Big Blue dominated the whole game. Swampscott coach Jack Hughes was happy with his team’s play.”My team played very well tonight, especially on defense. It was a highly contested game and it was good to see my girls play so well,” Hughes said.Leading the way for Swampscott was Jessie DePaolo, who scored nine points off the bench. Marina Padovani had a strong all-around game (9 pts, 5 assists, 5 rebounds). Swampscott is now 7-1.
