SAUGUS – Crews from the Department of Public Works hit the streets early Wednesday morning to help clean up Cliftondale Square and Saugus Center.Scott Crabtree, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, said the cleanup is part of a new effort to revitalize Saugus business districts.?There?s a lot of different groups in the community that really wanted to take pride in Saugus and clean up our squares and centers,” said Crabtree Wednesday morning. “This is part of a new initiative of working together. We?re looking forward to other endeavors in the spring time.”About 11 DPW workers with heavy brooms, shovels and the town?s mini-garbage truck started out at Saugus Center at around 7:30 a.m., and then moved onto Cliftondale Square, as DPW Director Joe Attubato called it a “clean sweep.”?Can you believe what we did in January?” asked Attubato. “Instead of cleaning up trash, we?d be cleaning up snow.”Sean Grant, Executive Director of the Saugus Chamber of Commerce, said keeping trash bins empty and sidewalks clean will help make Saugus more attractive.?One of the issues that was brought up was how do we make the squares a little cleaner and a little more inviting?” said Grant. “Scott gave us some great news and said the selectmen are going to make that a priority. It?s general maintenance, making sure the barrels are empty, making sure the sidewalks are kept clean. You don?t want to walk around where it?s unclean.”Grant said the cleanup project “dovetails nicely” with the recent resurgence of the Chamber of Commerce.?It shows the business community is working together with the community in general,” said Grant. “The chamber looks forward to working with the Board of Selectmen and revitalizing some of our squares.”Crabtree said he?s looking to make more improvements as the weather gets warmer, including hanging plants along the street lights at Cliftondale Square.?See all the poles? We used to have flowers and plants hanging from them,” said Crabtree, as he pointed to the rows of rusty plant hangers along Lincoln Avenue. “We?re trying to identify what the needs are of the community.”Attubato said the bus stop in front of the United Methodist Church on Lincoln Avenue was by far the dirtiest.?There?s a trash receptacle there but, for some reason, they don?t use it and just throw trash on the street and it ends up on the church property,” said Attubato. “We cleaned all that out there and both sides of Cliftondale Square all the way down to Staaf Road.”Attubato said the DPW and the Board of Selectmen have been trying to get these areas cleaned for a while, but cited a “breakdown in communication” for not getting to it sooner.Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
