Hockey Roundup: St. Mary’s beats Arlington Catholic

St. Mary’s sophomore goalie Bailey MacBurnie chose a great time to post his first shutout as the visiting Spartans defeated rival Arlington Catholic 4-0 on Wednesday night at Ed Burns Arena.”Bailey was great tonight,” said St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee. “This was a big game and he stepped up when we needed him.”In what Lee called a “total team effort,” the Spartans got what turned out to be the game winner at 11:33 of the second period. Eric McAdams netted the goal with an assist going to Nikko Markham.With MacBurnie standing tall behind them and the lead, the Spartans got to work. Brandon Mageary scored not even a minute after McAdams, with an assist going to Frank Moreschi. Bobby Mullins added another goal with :35 seconds to play in the period.With the game out of reach, Moreschi scored the fourth Spartans goal at 7:35. Cam O’Neil and Tim Aylward had assists.”It was a big rivalry game and an even bigger win,” said Lee of his team’s victory. “We’re always in a battle with Arlington for the league championship, and this victory puts us in a great spot to win it.”Lynnfield 1, North Andover 1At Merrimack, the Pioneers (6-1-1, 4-1-1) and Scarlet Knights played to a 1-1 tie. Lynnfield’s John Festa knotted the game at one with just 1:59 to play, earning his team a point. Pioneers goalie Joey Bassi finished with 23 saves.Saugus 8, Swampscott 3At Rockett Arena, the Sachems (5-3-1, 5-1-1 NE North) got a hat trick from senior Drew Oxley as they cruised past the Big Blue (5-3-1, 3-2-1 NE South). Fellow seniors Saige Tait (2 goals, assist) and Kurt Rodrigues (goal, 2 assist) also played key roles.Gloucester 5, Salem 1At Rockett Arena, the Fishermen (4-4-3, 2-3-2 NE North) got a hat trick from Johnny Interrante in a lopsided win over the Witches (1-8, 0-6 NE South). Mike Russo and Peter Mondello scored the other Gloucester goals while Sam Petri had the lone tally for Salem.Fenwick 1, Lowell Catholic 1At Chelmsford, Fenwick (1-7-1) took the lead 2:18 into the final period on a goal from Joe Shea but was unable to hold on as Lowell Catholic tied it at 14:28. Fenwick severely outshot its opponent (44-14) but had to settle for just the one point.GIRLS HOCKEYSt. Mary’s 9, Williams 0At Randolph, the Spartans (5-2, 2-0 CCL) had seven players with multiple-point games as they cruised past the host Bishops. Kaylie Finnigan (3 goals, 2 assists) led the way while Alison Butler added a goal and three assists. Goalie Lauren Skinnion turned aside all 12 shots she faced for the shutout.Medford 7, Marblehead 5At Medford, Marblehead was down for most of the game, but was able to dominate the early stages of the third period and tie the game up at 5-5. Medford was able to fend off the Magicians’ late charge in the final frame. Leading the way for Marblehead was Ally Healy (2 goals). Casey McDonald had a strong performance (1 goal, 1 assist). Marblehead is now 4-3-1.
