Boys Hoop: Gagliolo, Thompson power St. Mary’s

The duo of Nick Gagliolo and Devyn Thompson has been a chore for most people playing against St. Mary’s to handle so far this season. Friday proved to be no exception as Bishop Fenwick incurred the wrath of the Spartans two-headed monster.Gagliolo and Thompson combined for 47 points as the Spartans cruised to a 67-54 win over the Crusaders in Peabody.”Those two are our leaders,” Spartans coach Kevin Moran said of Thompson and Gagliolo.The Spartans (8-3, 3-1 CCL Large) led 19-12 after a quarter but exploded in the second quarter, pulling out to a 42-23 halftime lead. Matt Manning added 10 points and Randolf Thurman had eight for St. Mary’s.English 77, Gloucester 48At Gloucester, the Bulldogs (6-2, 4-2 NEC North) enjoyed the return of Keandre Stanton from suspension but still trailed by three at the half. English, though, rallied to outscore the Fishermen 49-17 in the second half.”I was proud of how we played defense in the second half,” English coach Mike Carr said.Stanton finished with 22 in his return while Steve Collins added 15 and freshman Eric Rosario had six points and eight assists in his first career start.Gr. Lowell 75, Tech 51At Tech, Michael Duarte had 19 points but the Tigers (1-8) struggled most of the game on offense in dropping one at home to the Gryphons.Beverly 81, Saugus 59At Saugus, the Panthers (7-3, 6-2 NEC North) were scorching hot from the floor as Chris Keaton had 19 points to lead four players in double figures for Beverly. Cam Rogers added a career high 17 while Avon Jones and John Birchoff finished with 11 each.Saugus got 12 points apiece from Curtis Casella and Selim Omorovic.Winthrop 55, Revere 44At Revere, Joe D’Amore had 16 points while Josh Babb and Jeff Laguerre added 11 each as the Vikings (9-2, 8-0 NEC South) got a challenge from the Patriots.Quinton Dale added nine points, nine blocks and 12 rebounds for Winthrop. Revere was led by 11 points from Dom Boyce.Peabody 58,Swampscott 53At Swampscott, the Tanners (5-4) trailed for much of the game and were down by seven midway through the fourth quarter before charging back to get the hard-fought win.”We didn’t play great but we played good enough to win,” Peabody coach Thad Broughton said.Mike Gould led all scorers with 21 points for Peabody. Jason Hiou and Steve Girolamo added 14 each. The Big Blue got 15 points from Val Temin and 13 from Mike Walsh.Salem 54, Marblehead 46At Marblehead, Christian Dunston had 25 points as the Witches (4-4) used a late run to pull away for the road win. Jeff Peras had 17 and Brian Gellert, 13 for the Magicians.Cath. Mem. 89,St. John’s 64At West Roxbury, the Eagles (6-2, 1-2 Catholic Conference) got 30 points from Freddie Shove and 17 from Owen Marchetti but had no answer for the Knights as foul troubles plagued the Prep all game.
