The Danvers High gymnastics team defeated Hamilton-Wenham, 139.35-122.15, this past weekend.Roni Levine paced undefeated Danvers (4-0) in the victory against Hamilton-Wenham, taking first in the all-around and first in all of her individual events except beam (second). Freshman Lauren Geissler also competed in the all-around, winning the beam and placing third in the vault and bars. Nikki Kowalski placed second on the bars and third in floor exercise and Lee Famigletti contributed a third in vault.”The key to our success is that we’re getting really strong performances from our younger gymnasts. They’re just getting stronger with every meet. We had a waiver last year to allow eighth-graders to compete so someone like Lauren (Geissler) maybe isn’t your typical freshman. The Pioneers improved to 6-4 overall.WRESTLINGPelham TournamentMarblehead-Swampscott took only five wrestlers to this Granite State event but came home with a pair of second-place finishes. After earning first-round byes, junior captain Jake Powell (113) of Swampscott and junior Sean Taylor (285) of Marblehead both won a pair of matches before dropping one-point decisions in the championship round.Woburn InvitationalFour St. John’s Prep wrestlers won individual championships as the Eagles rolled to the team title at the Woburn Invitational. Louis Bornstein won via pin in the 106-pound title match while Jared Costa (126), Ian Butterbrodt (182) and Cory Jean-Jacques (HW) won by decision. Micah Anderle (132) and James Ingemi (195) claimed seconds. St. John’s (24-1) takes on Shawsheen, West Springfield and Josiah Quincy in a four-way match today.TRACKThe Beverly boys and girls took part in Sunday’s MSTCA Div. 2 Relays at The Reggie Lewis Center. The boys finished in a tie for 18th with four points on the strength of a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a cumulative effort of 16-7 1/2 and sixth-place showings in the 4×400 (3:35.10) and shot put (122-4 1/4). The girls tied for 19th with six points. Top performances came in the high jump (14-3 1/4), which tied for second, and the 1600 sprint medley (sixth) and 4 x 800 (seventh).On Saturday, the Bishop Fenwick boys and girls teams both finished tied for 23rd place with one point each in the MSTCA Div. 4 Relays held at The Reggie. The Div. 1 and 3 events are set for this coming weekend.
