SAUGUS – A Saugus man and his dog are safe after he waded out in waste-deep ice water Monday to save his black lab that had fallen through the ice at Walden Pond, said Saugus Fire Capt. Arthur Sinclair.?A kid was walking the dog and the dog went out on the ice and then broke through,” said Sinclair. “The kid called his father and he came down and went through the ice waste-deep, and dragged him in.”Walden Pond sits at the end of Hawkes Street off of Route 1 North.Sinclair said the man had already rescued the dog by the time firefighters arrived, but noted it?s not recommended people attempt such a rescue on their own.?It?s pretty deep up there, but it?s a really gradual slope off the shore,” said Sinclair. “It?s very dangerous. At that point are we going to have a dog and person in the water? Luckily he got him out and they live right close by so he went home and got out of his wet clothes. Everyone seemed OK.”Sinclair said the ice on the pond hasn?t had much time to build up with the recent above-average temperatures, even with this few day cold stretch.?We haven?t had ice for very long so it?s not very thick to begin with,” said Sinclair. “It?s still clear and you can see through it. He just trudged out there and went right through as soon as he stepped on it. We had sent the boat also ? but he was out by the time we got there so everything worked out.”Sinclair said people aren?t supposed to be out on Walden Pond, which serves as a reservoir and provides drinking water for Lynn.?But I?m sure everyone that abuts it does,” said Sinclair.Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
