Basketball: Tech boys survive slow start

The Tech boys basketball team started slow out of the gates, but was able to overcome the slow start and defeat Shawsheen 50-40 at Shawsheen Tuesday night.Tech coach Marvin Avery was very happy with his team’s performance.”My team played a very good game tonight. They are playing really good ball right now and it’s fun to coach and watch,” Avery said.Tech found itself down 16-0 late in the first quarter. Tech went on a 28-7 run to close out the first half, and had a 28-23 lead at the half. Tech never looked back from that point on. Leading the way for Tech was Michael Duarte (15 pts). Junior Mangule Mbangu had a strong performance as well (8 pts). Tech is now 2-9.St. John’s 78, Xaverian 60At St. John’s, St. John’s led 49-41 at the end of the third quarter. St. John’s outscored Xaverian by 10 in the final frame to help pull away. Leading the way for St. John’s were Mike Carbone (17 points), Tim Haladyna (15), Tyler Dooley (12 points, 11 assists) and Freddy Shove (11 points). St. John’s is now 8-2.Spellman 54, Fenwick 44At Fenwick, Fenwick was down nine at halftime. The Crusaders cut the lead down to six, but that was the closest Fenwick would get. Leading the way for Fenwick was Dom Luoni (20 pts). Fenwick is now 1-7.Malden Catholic 71, Gloucester 39At Gloucester, Josh Vizena had a strong floor game at the point guard position for Gloucester (1-10).Academy of Pacific Rim 41, KIPP Academy Lynn Collegiate 31At Hyde Park, leading the way for KIPP was Pedro Morales (26 pts). Ricardo Maria had a strong game on the boards for KIPP. KIPP is now 1-7.GIRLS BASKETBALLSwampscott 42, Danvers 26At Danvers, Swampscott had a strong team effort across the board. Leading the way for Swampscott was Caroline Murphy (12 pts, 9 rebounds). Niki Laskaris also helped out (10 pts, 8 rebounds). Alexa Goldman had six points off the bench. Swampscott is now 9-1.Spellman 40, Fenwick 36At Spellman, Fenwick was up 32-29 at the end of the third quarter. Fenwick had a tough fourth quarter, only scoring four points in the final frame. Leading the way for Fenwick was Gianna Pizzano (15 pts). Fenwick is now 5-5.Shawsheen 54, Tech 30At Shawsheen, Tech was down 26 points at the half and could never fully recover. Tech outscored Shawsheen in the second half 24-22. Leading the way for Tech was Tori Park (11 pts). Claribelle Ramirez chipped in with 10 points. Tech is now 2-11.
