LYNN – Lynn Police arrested a man Tuesday on assault with a dangerous weapon charges after he allegedly drove onto a Lynn sidewalk in an attempt to run a woman over, according to a police report filed Tuesday afternoon.A Lynn District Court judge released Velter DeLeon, 34, of 281 Essex St. #12, on personal recognizance during his arraignment Wednesday, despite the fact that the 25-year-old victim of the assault told police she was “extremely afraid of him,” according to the report. The woman, who the report said does not speak English, went to Lynn Police headquarters around 1 p.m. Tuesday to report that she had been walking on Essex Street toward Rockaway at about 11 a.m. when DeLeon, who she said was alone in a car, spotted her and “attempted to run her over” by driving up onto the sidewalk, the report said. She told officers she ran behind a utility pole to avoid being struck and DeLeon drove off toward downtown. The report said the woman told officers her family has been receiving threats from DeLeon because he “blames her brother for getting him fired from his landscaping job.”DeLeon faces up to five years in prison if convicted of the assault, according to court records. He is due back in court on March 2.Taylor Provost can be reached at [email protected].
