Track: Classical girls, English boys take home city bragging rights

The Classical girls track team won its final meet of the season over rival English 58-28 at Tech Wednesday night.Click here for an English-Classical track photo gallery.Classical coach Lauren Phelps was very pleased with her team’s season as a whole.”My team had a very strong season this year. All my girls improved as the season progressed, and we will have five girls participating in states,” Phelps said.Winners for Classical (3-4) were: Adrianna Raymond, shot put (28-3 1/2); Carla Altema, 55 meter hurdles (8.2); Saffie Bangura, 50 dash (6.6); Anna Wargo, 300 meters (46.6); Jennifer Ierardi, 600 (1:55.8) and Kathy Perez, 1,000 (4:00.17). Bangura is a senior captain, who has been undefeated in conference meets over the past two years. For English, winners were: Ridrelli Gruillon, high jump (4-2); Karla Ross, mile (6:30.5) and Taylor Holey, 2-mile (15:18). English finished the season at 2-5.Winthrop 46, Saugus 39At Tech, the Sachems had three winners. Winners for Saugus were: Mary Dixon, shot put (32-3); Victoria Sparages, 300 meters (49.8) and Casey Hyde, 2-mile (14:33.3). Saugus is now 2-5.BOYS TRACKEnglish 53, Classical 33At Tech, the Bulldogs had a strong team performance and had seven different winners. Winners for English (3-4) were: Marco Portes, shot put (44-6); Alex Ortega, 50 yard dash (5.9); Joshua Batista, 300 meters (40.2); Alex Bonitto, 600 (1:32.4); Matt Blaney, mile (5:19.8); Peter Matu, 1,000 (3:02.9) and Chris Birotte, 2-mile (11:04.8). English coach John Walsh was happy with his team’s season.”My kids had a very strong season. The season played out a lot how I imagined it, but my kids worked very hard day in and day out,” Walsh said.For Classical, winners were: George Clark, high jump (5-10) and Andrew Mehan, 50-yard hurdles (7.8). Classical finished the season at 1-6.Saugus 65, Winthrop 11At Tech, double winner Olisaemeka Obiefuna led the charge for the Sachems. Obiefuna took the high jump (5-10) and 50-yard dash (6.0). The rest of the winners for Saugus were: Dominic DiPesa, shot put (37-53 3/4); Steven Essery, 50 yard hurdles (7.5); Ismael Minaya, 300 meters (41.9); Andre Ipojuca, 600 (1:41.8); Kevin Powers, 1,000 (2:53.6) and David Woodward, mile (6:05.7). Saugus is now 3-4.Marblehead 56, Revere 30At Marblehead, double winner Nolan Raimo led the way for Marblehead. Raimo took the high jump (6-0) and 55-meter hurdles (8.0). Other winners for Marblehead were: Danny Plunkett, shot put (45-0); Connor Green, 55 meter dash (6.8); Josh Beloff, 300 (39.4); Ian McIver, 600 (1:33.7); Chris Wigglesworth, mile (5:01) and James Wigglesworth, 2-mile (10:23). Marblehead finished the season at 6-1.
