LYNN – St. Pius fifth-graders Emily Wood and Lauren Casey love to make people laugh. That?s why they got the courage to go up on stage at St. Pius? annual talent show and perform.?We are crazy and stupid,” Wood said. “We like to make people happy.”Wood and Casey were just two of the roughly 20 students who performed at the talent show.Click here for a photo gallery of the talent show. The duo performed a comedy sketch called “Abstract Apple.”?I was so nervous before we got up there,” Casey said. But Wood said she was calm before their big performance.?You have to be. If you are all nervous you won?t be able to get up on stage,” she said. The comedy pair did so well that they won first place in the competition. “I?m shocked. I didn?t think we would win anything,” Casey said.Other performers included seventh-grader Jennifer Ogasian, who sang Taylor Swift?s “Our Song” along with playing guitar.?Last year, I started to play guitar and I thought this would be a good way to show it off,” Ogasian said about why she wanted to be a part of the talent show.Ogasian decided to perform a Taylor Swift because she loves her music. “She is my favorite singer in the whole wide world. I like her lyrics. I think there is a lot of meaning behind them,” she said. “She was the first concert I ever went to.”Like Casey, Ogasian was equally nervous about performing in front of a room filled with people.?I?ve been in a talent show before so I knew I could do it,” she said. The seventh-grader said that it took her about a month to learn the song.Sixth-grader Meghan Turner also sang at the talent show. She performed “Where is Love” from the musical Oliver.?I was in the musical a while back and I loved the song,” Turner said. “I thought it would be perfect for a talent show.”Turner lives to perform.?I like singing a lot,” she said. “I love how it builds your confidence.”The singer says she has performed in front of a crowd five or six times.?The more and more you get up there, the easier it is,” Turner said.Sara Brown can be reached at [email protected].
