Roundup: Powell fifth at 113 pounds in D3 wrestling

Marblehead-Swampscott 113-pounder Jake Powell overcame a shoulder injury to place fifth in the State Division 3 Individual Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Taconic Regional High School. Powell qualified for All-States, to be held in two weeks.Powell pinned Greg Berube of Cohasset in 1:00 and registered an 11-5 decision over Trevor Bengston of Southwick before getting injured in a 20-10 semifinal loss.”I think we as a coaching staff may have underestimated the kid he was wrestling. But, the shoulder should be fine and he will be ready to go in two weeks,” said coach Mike Stamison.Swampscott-Marblehead’s Sean Taylor competed at 285 pounds and won one match.Lynnfield had two placers as Tom Arsenault finished fourth at 220 pounds and Richie Falcione claimed fifth at 138 pounds.In the Division 2 competition in Reading, Salem’s Adelin Cueto worked his way out of the loser’s bracket to finish third overall at 138 pounds.In the Division 1 tournament in Weymouth, St. John’s Prep 145-pounder Jamie Morey placed third. He defeated Jacob Wyman of Brockton (6-3) and Michael Gardner of Putnam (3:23) before getting pinned by eventual champion C.J. Doherty of Methuen at 1:23 of their semifinal bout.The Eagles got sixth-place showings from Jared Costa (126) and David Kou (170).Peabody’s D.J. Henrick was fifth at 220 pounds, bowing to champion Murad Usmanov of West Springfield via pin in the semifinals.GYMNASTICSNEC champion Beverly had four top-six finishers in Saturday’s CAL-NEC Meet. Senior Liz Layman finished second on beam with a score of 8.8 while freshman Hannah Rennie placed sixth in the same event with an 8.4 score. Junior Katie Wheatley (4th, vault) and senior Courtney Hannable (6th, bars, 8.05) also turned in strong performances.Freshman Heather Gomes (all-around, 36.23 season average) and Taylor Mettie (vault, 9.625) were announced as all-stars.Katherine Pittman placed in two events for Marblehead-Swampscott, scoring 9.0 for second in the vault and 8.75 for third in floor exercise.GIRLS BASKETBALLKIPP Academy Lynn Collegiate 51, Boston Preparatory Charter 27Pleilerkay Gaye scored a career-high 21 points and Serena High scored a season-high 13. Alex Huffman added seven points with nine rebounds and 10 steals. The win boosted KALC’s league record to 9-1 (12-1 overall) and knocked Boston Prep down to 6-3 in the MCSAO. The victory puts KALC in sole possession of second place.
