Roundup: Saugus dominates glass in win over Swampscott

The Saugus boys basketball team dominated the glass against Swampscott, which helped the Sachems defeat Swampscott, 56-53, at Saugus Tuesday night.Saugus won the rebounding margin by a staggering number of 20 (45-25). Saugus coach Paul Moran was satisfied with his team’s performance not only on the glass but also as a whole.”It was a great game tonight, that had the atmosphere of a tournament game. It was good for my team to win a game like this. It was great to see how well they held their composure when the game was tight,” Moran said.Leading the way for Saugus (9-9) was senior captain Curtis Casella (13 pts, 7 assists). Brendan Wladkowski and Joe Bertrand both scored 11 points each. Leading the way for Swampscott was A.J. Baker (14 pts). Swampscott was eliminated from qualifying for the state tournament.Peabody 60, English 39At Peabody, the trio of Mike Gould, Jason Hiou and Steve Girolamo led the Peabody attack. The Tanner (9-10) trio combined to score 46 points. Hiou added six rebounds and six assists, and Girolamo added five rebounds and seven assists. Peabody coach Thad Broughton was very happy with his team’s performance.”My team played very well tonight. I have all the respect in the world for English, but it is great to beat a team that has dominated our conference for the past five years,” Broughton said.English (12-5) was an undermanned team, with only nine suiting up for the game and Keandre Stanton sitting this one out. Two of the nine Bulldogs who played were JV players as well. Leading the way for English was Danny Lukanda (4 pts, 12 rebounds). Stanton will be back on Friday.Marblehead 48, Gloucester 40At Gloucester, the Fishermen were in a close game throughout. Gloucester was down between three and eight points the whole game, but could never get over the hump to take a lead. Leading the way for Gloucester (1-16) was Jason Vizena (15 pts).Fenwick 59, Cristo Rey 47At Fenwick, Fenwick was up 38-35 going into the final frame. Fenwick had its best quarter when it mattered most, and outscored Cristo Rey 21-12 in the fourth quarter. Leading the way for Fenwick was Matt Costello (18 pts). Josh Gustin chipped in with nine points. Fenwick is now 5-12.Beverly 61, Revere 49At Revere, the Panthers had a 14-point lead at the half and never looked back. Leading the way for Beverly was Aven Jones (18 pts, 11 rebounds). Chris Keaton chipped in with 10 points for Beverly. Dom Abate had a solid performance as well (10 pts, 5 assists). Beverly is now 11-7.HOCKEYLynn Jets 4, Attleboro 4At Connery Rink, Tony Uva had a pair of goals for the Jets, who saw a 4-3 lead slip away when Attleboro tied the game late in the third period. The Jets, who also had goals from Kyle Devin and Dan Rustani, are 7-8-3 with two games remaining. They need three points to qualify for the state tournament. Mike Gately (20 saves) was in net for Lynn.
