Hockey: Clark’s six points pace Winthrop to win

The Winthrop/Lynn girls hockey team is becoming a burgeoning power in the world of Division 1 girls hockey. On Wednesday, Mackenzie Clark had four goals and two assists as the Bulldogs (13-2-1) scored the game’s final seven goals to take an 8-1 win over Auburn at Horgan Skating Arena.Vanessa Vanbuskirk, Julianna Kennedy and Caroline McKinnon each had a goal and an assist while Chelsey Bartlett had three assists. Arianna Dembro also had a goal.GIRLS HOCKEYSt. Mary’s 6, Fontbonne 2At Connery Rink, Brittani Lanzilli was Fontbonne’s worst nightmare with a four-goal night. Alison Butler was her partner in crime with four assists. The Spartans (15-3) also had goals from Gina Beth Manganiello and Rachael Donahoe.There was a scary moment in the second period when St. Mary’s defenseman Madison Molea was hit from behind and went into the boards. Molea was taken to Salem Hospital to be checked out. According to her father, Gary Molea, she’s OK. She didn’t suffer a concussion, but she does have a sore neck.BOYS HOCKEYLynnfield 3, North Reading 2At Burbank Ice Arena, the Pioneers (14-3-1, 10-3-1 Cape Ann League) overcame a 2-0 second-period deficit to lock up second place in the CAL and stay atop the Division 2 North standings.Greg Meininger had two second-period goals to bring the Pioneers back even before Tyler Smith got the game-winner at 6:41 of the third.Beverly 4, Saugus 1At Rockett Arena in Salem, the hottest team in the Northeastern Conference stayed that way as cousins Andrew and Connor Irving each scored twice for the Panthers, who won their eighth in a row.Beverly (12-5-1, 9-4-0 NEC North) led 1-0 after one on an Andrew Irving goal. The Sachems (10-6-2, 9-3-2) tied the game early in the second on Drew Oxley’s goal but it was all Panthers from there.Connor Irving scored late in the second and again in the third before his cousin closed things out with 3:19 remaining.Revere 2, Marblehead 1At Cronin Rink in Revere, the Headers had a 41-10 shots on goal advantage but ran into a red-hot goalie in John Papasodora, who made 40 saves in the upset win.Marblehead took a 1-0 lead early in the second on Liam Gillis’ goal before Revere’s R.J. Tiorano scored twice in less than two minutes late in the period to cap the scoring.The Headers face Swampscott on Saturday (5) at Salem State with the NEC South championship on the line.Winthrop 2, Gloucester 0At Talbot Rink in Gloucester, Chris Page scored in each of the first two periods as the Vikings (11-5-2, 10-2-2 NEC North) stayed in a first-place tie with Danvers and knocked the Fishermen out of postseason contention.James Barker and Mitch Paulson each had an assist.St. John’s 4, Framingham 2At Loring Ice Arena in Framingham, Brian Pinho had two goals and an assist as the Eagles (12-5-1) solidified their Super 8 resume. Sam Kurker had three assists while David LeTarte made 18 saves.Danvers 5, Peabody 0At McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody, J.D. Hodgkins scored twice as the Falcons (13-4-0, 11-3-0 NEC North) remained tied atop the NEC North standings with Winthrop. Jack Doyle, Jay Calcagno and Matt Flynn also had goals for Danvers, who outshot the Tanners (6-9-1) 41-18.
