LYNN – Lynn firefighters evacuated a large multi-family home in downtown Lynn on Saturday morning after the door hang caught on fire, sending smoke into the hallway and up the stairs.Lynn firefighters, police and emergency rescue teams showed up to 234 South Common St. just after 11:30 a.m. Saturday to put out a small fire that started just above the building’s doorway, according to Lynn Police Sgt. Henry Wojewodzic.Firefighters evacuated the home, which contained about six families, before putting out the fire by hooking up a hose to a nearby fire hydrant, Wojewodzic said. No one was injured, Wojewodzic said.”The guys got in here quickly,” he said.Wojewodzic said the fire didn’t spread beyond the doorway’s overhang but it did send smoke up the house’s stairwell. After the fire was put out, about a dozen residents stood outside the building, some barefoot and clutching pets, watching firefighters tear down the smoldering overhang and clean up debris of wet, smoking wood.Yan Sao said she was cooking in the kitchen at about 11:30 a.m. when she heard firefighters call for them to get out of their apartment. She and her family grabbed their cat, Blackie, and ran down the smoking stairwell outside.”I covered the chicken and ran,” she said.Saw Zayr said he was outside retrieving his mail when he noticed the door hang was on fire.Wojewodzic said the residents will likely be allowed to return to their homes after firefighters clear debris.
