SAUGUS – An early morning car accident sent two men to the hospital with serious injuries, after the car they were riding in struck a pole on Route 107 and split in half, according to Saugus Fire Chief James BlanchardBlanchard said the accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Route 107 south near RESCO. He said the car split in half and a portion of one of the doors was found 35 feet up in a tree.”The front of the car was 60 feet from the back of the car,” said Blanchard. “I’ve never seen a car split completely in half that way.”Blanchard said there were two passengers in the car, one with critical injuries and the other with severe injuries. He said a Medflight helicopter was called, but it couldn’t fly because it was raining so the two men were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital by ambulance.”One of them was out of the car and sitting on the ground but he was critically injured,” said Blanchard. “He was probably thrown. He was in really bad shape.”Blanchard said speed may have played a role in the crash.”I couldn’t even guess, but they were going fast,” said Blanchard. “Traditionally that’s a flat, straight road and there’s a history of people going very fast.”Blanchard said the accident also brought down power lines across both lanes and all of 107 had to be shut down.”The likelihood of someone surviving an accident like that is just about zero,” said Blanchard. “But here you have two people that did.”Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
