School: St. Mary’s girls hockey rolls along

The St. Mary’s girls hockey team is heading into the postseason on quite the streak.After beginning the season 2-2, the Spartans have gone 15-1-1 over their last 17 games following a 4-0 win at Connery Rink against Winchester on Monday.”We were a little sloppy at times, but we were able to find a way to score some goals,” St. Mary’s coach Frank Pagliuca said.St. Mary’s (16-3-1) took a 1-0 lead midway through the first on Brittani Lanzilli’s tally, assisted by Kaleigh Finigan and Amanda Donahoe, It was still 1-0 in the second when Finigan scored at 3:40, assisted by Lanzilli and Allison Butler.Gabby Crugnale made it 3-0 midway through the second, assisted by Gina Beth and Ann Marie Manganiello. Butler scored 45 seconds later to cap the scoring.Lauren Skinnion stopped all 14 shots she faced to get the shutout. The Spartans hit the road Wednesday to face Acton-Boxboro.BOYS HOCKEYDanvers 3, Haverhill 2At Graf Rink in Newburyport, Joe Strangie netted a hat trick, including the game winner with 4:10 remaining, as the newly crowned NEC North champions survived a scare from the two-win Hillies.Newburyport 4, Fenwick 1At Graf Rink in Newburyport, the Crusaders got a third period goal from Mike Cipriani but it wasn’t enough as they couldn’t overcome a 4-0 deficit through two periods.Beverly 10, Peabody 1At McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody, the Panthers (14-5-1) made their first visit to the Carlin Cup a memorable one as Andrew Irving scored four goals to help Beverly close the season on a 10 game win streak.Brenden Mitchell had two goals while Connor Irving had a goal and four assists to push his NEC leading point total to 56.BOYS BASKETBALLChelmsford 80, Salem 76 (OT)At the Woburn Tournament, the Witches (11-10) got 22 points from Marvin Baez and 19 from Christian Dunston but couldn’t pull out the win in the extra session.GIRLS BASKETBALLFenwick 55, Danvers 26At Danvers, Kate Lipka had 12 points and five steals as the Crusaders (9-12) had 21 steals as a team. Maura Doyle added 10 points and Gianna Pizzano had nine points and six assists.WRESTLINGDiv. 1 finalsAt the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, St. John’s Prep came one win shy of a state title. The Eagles defeated West Springfield, 38-12, in the Division 1 state semifinal, but lost to powerhouse Methuen, 36-20, in the state final. Last year the Eagles lost in the sectional final to the eventual state champ, Lawrence.Four wrestlers went 2-0 for The Prep on Monday, Louis Bornstein (106 pounds); David Kou (170); Ian Butterbrodt (182) and James Ingemi (195). Corey Jean-Jacques went 1-0 at heavyweight in the final.The Eagles also had wins in the semifinal from Rich Glazier (113); D.J. Lemieux (120); Jared Costa (126); James Smith (138); Jamie Morey (145); and V.J. Mortillaro (152).
