MARBLEHEAD – From September-December 2011, Marblehead had 45 student athletes diagnosed with head injuries – and the town will now be in compliance with a new state law regarding that type of injury, thanks to a new policy formulated by Lead Nurse Anne Scott.?She was on this early and has done a lot of background work,” Superintendent of Schools Greg Maass told the School Committee recently. The School Committee voted unanimously to approve the policy in the first of three required readings last week, but made it effective immediately to comply with a state-mandated March 1 deadline. The law has widely been referred to as the athletic concussion law. Contact and non-contact sports are covered by the policy and so is the marching band.In a memo to the committee Scott said, “Marblehead had many aspects of the law already in place for high school athletics, but needed to expand (it) to all extracurricular activity.”
