Satellite dishes vex Revere councilors

REVERE – Revere City Councilors expressed concerned about the growing problem of satellite dishes on buildings Monday night.Councilors John R. Correggio and Arthur Guinasso presented a motion that the mayor request the city solicitor and the Site Plan Review Board to draft an ordinance regulating the number and placement of satellite dishes on buildings.Guinasso said the increase in satellite dishes in the neighborhood is an “eye sore.”?One house has seven dishes on it. What are we doing?” Guinasso asked the council.?We want to beautify our neighborhood,” Correggio added. “This ruins our city.”The council asked East Boston Councilor Salvatore LaMattina to speak on the matter. LaMattina has also dealt with similar issues dealing with satellite dishes in East Boston. He is filing an ordinance on Wednesday about the topic. He has been working on this for three years. In LaMattina?s ordinance it bans satellite dishes to be placed on the front sides of houses and buildings with some exceptions.?If you can?t get a signal then go right ahead put it on the front side,” LaMattina explained.?Satellite companies should be responsible for the placement and removal of these but they are not,” he added. “It?s a quality of life issue.”The Revere City Council is hoping to use LaMattina?s ordinance as a guide for their own.?We can tweak it so it can best fit the needs of Revere,” Guinasso said.?I really want to see some type of ordinance in Revere,” Correggio added.Guinasso also stated that the abundance of satellite dishes scared Verizon from competing with Comcast for business in the city.?They know the market is limited based on these dishes,” he said. “This does our city a good service twice.”Sara Brown can be reached at [email protected].
