LOWELL – $mdash; In a tournament of tall orders, today?s might be the tallest of them all.The Saugus boys basketball team goes up against Danvers today (12:15) at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, with the winner taking the Division 3 North title and advancing to the Boston Garden Monday.Coach Paul Moran isn?t under any illusions this one?s going to be easy. None of them have.?We played them twice this season,” Moran said. “We lost by 40 the first time; 30 the second time.?I think the last time we lost to them was our last loss. We?ve obviously improved since then, but I hope we?ve improved 40 points.”Danvers, which is the best team in Division 3, according to Moran, boasts a team that can just about do it all.The leaders include 6-7 center George Merry, “who has been great for us,” said Danvers coach John Walsh. “He?s a good rebounder, and a good defender. He?s hada nice year for himself.”Also big contributors from Danvers are junior Danny Connors, a 6-3 forward who has averaged 17 points in the tournament; forward Nick Bates, a swingman who has averaged 10 points; and guards Jon Amico and Eric Martin, “who kind of run the ship for us.?Off the bench is Nick McKenna, a transfer from St. John?s Prep, “who is a high IQ players,” Walsh said. The Falcons were down by 10 Tuesday night to Wayland, and somehow rallied to win in overtime to earn the right to play today. The hero was Mike Scarfo, who hit a 3-pointer with six seconds left in regulation to tie the game.Walsh had plenty of respect for Saugus.?They?re playing unbelievable now,” he said. “They?ve won seven in a row, they had a big win over Winthrop late in the season, they knocked off the top seed (Whittier), and they?re playing unbelievable.”Walsh said Saugus “rebounds well, defends well, and shoots well. They have four shooters on the floor at all times, and they do a good job contesting shots.?We?ll be fortunate to pull this out,” he said.Saugus leads with Curtis Casella, the senior point guard who runs the show for the Sachems.?Even if he doesn?t look like he?s doing much out there, he is,” Walsh said, alluding to the fact that he was quiet in the first half and ended up with 19 points. “He does everything for them.”Saugus had a big game from sophomore Joe Bertrand (24 points) in Thursday?s 86-70 win over Arlington Catholic, and also got a huge contribution from Brenden Wladkowski, who had 17 points and seven assists. Each team knows it?ll have to have it?s A-game to win.?We play hard,” Walsh said. “And by playing hard certain things go our way. We defend OK. In the past, that?s been our calling card. We?re going to have to do it again (today).?We?re going to have to have our A game, Moran said, “and hope they have an off-day. They had our number both times. We?re going to go at them hard.”Steve Krause can be reached at [email protected].
