SAUGUS – The U.S. Secret Service was back on the North Shore Monday, after Saugus police arrested a New Hampshire man on a federal warrant for counterfeiting.Saugus Police arrested Anthony Silva, of 455 Pine St., #108, Manchester, N.H., on an outstanding warrant for uttering counterfeit obligations or securities at 2:26 p.m. on Monday, and handed him over to the Secret Service about an hour later.Alfred Rubega, assistant U.S. attorney for New Hampshire, said the charge stems from an arrest in October 2010 in New Hampshire, where he alleges Silva had 97 fake $10 bills and 103 fake $20 bills for a total of more than $3,000.Rubega said Silva was arraigned Tuesday in Federal Court in Concord, N.H. and is being held pending a hearing to discuss conditions of his release.?The defendant was, back in 2010, arrested as a result of a tip and the allegation is that the counterfeit currency was found on his person and in his vehicle after a search warrant was executed,” said Rubega.Rubega declined to comment on why Silva remained free for almost two years.Saugus Assistant Police Chief Leonard Campanello said Silva was arrested while he was trying to pick up his car at McGarvey Towing on Route 1, and that the arrest was the result of an investigation by the Secret Service.Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
