Illegal dumping on Saugus line a concern to residents, officials

March 21, 2012 by Matt Tempesta

SAUGUS – Lorna Cerbone, Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator for Saugus, said she tracked down 13 bags of trash illegally dumped on Fairmont Avenue over the weekend to a man in Revere.Cerbone said neighbors noticed the bags at noon on Sunday, and based on what she found in the bags, she said the suspect most likely was having a St. Patrick?s Day party. The trash was found on the Lynn-Saugus border.?We have a bag full of evidence,” said Cerbone. “Pictures his kids drew to daddy, hospital bills, mail ? work orders, I have bank statements. Several pieces that come from that same address and same name. There are 13 bags and out of 10 bags I found something in each bag. They weren?t smart about it.”Selectman Julie Mitchell was at the scene with Cerbone on Tuesday and said Fairmont Avenue is notorious for illegal dumping.?It?s horrible,” said Mitchell. “It?s been a problem for so many years, but no one has really acted on it because what happens is you get Saugus saying, ?That?s Lynn? and you get Lynn saying, ?That?s Saugus.? It?s time we work together and figure out a solution.”Cerbone said the bags were dumped on the Lynn side of the street, so the Lynn Department of Public Works will be investigating further.?We?re going to have Lynn come out here and prosecute the person that dumped and fine them,” said Cerbone.Calls to the Lynn DPW were not returned Tuesday.Mitchell said the problem has gotten so bad that she wants to look into ways of solving the issue once and for all.?We are looking into getting cameras and posting illegal dumping signs saying there will be a fine,” said Mitchell. “We have to get on it and stay on it until it?s solved. Right now there are two toilets up there, 13 bags of trash and a lot of tires. People think they can just drive down there and dump their stuff.”Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
