Music filled the halls of Lynn English High School after school on Monday afternoon as The Lynn High School Band practiced for its biggest performance yet.The band has been invited to march and perform in the National Fourth of July Parade in Washington, D.C.The students will be on a national stage performing for the President, members of Congress, thousands of tourists and countless television viewers.View a photo gallery of the band practicing. However, they have to raise $30,000 for all 30 students to go. So far, they have only been able to raise $2,000 to $5,000, which is enough for six people to go, according to Band Director Eric Jefferson. The band has been raising money for several months now and hopes to have all the money they need for the trip by May.?The kids have been so diligent. I want them to see something from inception pay off,” Jefferson said. “I want them to know that hard work does pay off. I want the city to rally around the band.”The band is one of two bands from Massachusetts that have been invited to play.Being able to perform in the parade is a great opportunity for the students, they said.?It?s my first year in the band and I really want it to be memorable,” 14-year-old Nepheli Beos said. Beos plays the flute. For others, the trip will be a great way to end their experience in the band.?It will be a great last thing to do with the band,” Catherine Murray, a senior, said Monday.Jefferson said the band has been preparing for months to get ready for the big occasion.?They rehearse four hours a week,” he said. “They have put a lot of effort into this.”Jefferson said the band will continue to rehearse until the big day and they will perform in some upcoming parades.?It will help get the kids ready to perform outside,” Jefferson said.If you would like to donate please go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lynn-High-School-Marching-Band-Washington-Dc-National-Parade-Fund-Raising/328142193895549?sk=app_18015191938.You can also send checks to the Lynn Band Boosters Association, 22 Broadway Circle, Lynn, MA 01904.Sara Brown can be reached at [email protected].
