Bobby Liberge, a hockey player for Bishop Fenwick High School, has been named the Catholic Central League’s winner of the Boston Bruins/MIAA Sportsmanship Award.Liberge, from Lynn, will attend Tuesday’s Bruins game against the Tampa Bay Lightning and be introduced on the ice, in his game jersey, with all the other league recipients, between the second and third periods.”I was totally surprised when I got the phone call telling me I got this award,” said Liberge. “During games, I always tried to be the best sportsman I could, to the referees and to other kids.”Hockey’s a tough game,” Liberge said. “And you have to play tough, and there’s a lot of hitting and battles, and things ? but you don’t want to see kids get hurt. You don’t want the game to get out of hand. Just play hockey, and let the best man win.”Liberge was a member of the Lynn Youth Hockey program since the age of 8. He played on five consecutive championship teams with teammates such as John Finnigan and Kyle Devin of the Lynn Jets, teammate Will Clancy, and St. Mary’s stars Brendan Mageary and Bryan Wilkins. He also played for the Lynnfield Spartans and Middlesex Islanders.As a freshman at Fenwick, he was named most improved player. A year later, he began the season on the third line and quickly moved up the ladder until he was put on the first line.He has been scouted by the Ice Lions of Penn State, where he plans on attending next fall. He has been accepted to other schools, including UNH, Quinnipiac, Providence, Merrimack and Westfield State.Liberge is president of the senior class and a member of the National Honor Society. He has also been chosen by the principal of Bishop Fenwick, Sr. Catherine Fleming, to be profiled as one of the “Faces of Fenwick” as an example of the school’s positive aspects.Steve Krause can be reached at [email protected].
