Baseball: English’s Burnham quiets Beverly bats

Bulldogs pitcher Matt Burnham kept the Panthers’ bats under wraps all afternoon, as English defeated Beverly 6-1 at Fraser Field Wednesday.Burnham pitched seven innings, surrendered five hits, struck out 11, walked one and gave up one run. English (3-2) was down 1-0 going into the bottom for the third inning. The Bulldogs received an RBI single from Matt Merritt, and also scored three unearned runs off Beverly errors. The score was 4-1 after three innings. English added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning from an RBI single by Ben Bowden and an RBI double from Burnham. For Beverly, Cam Rogers led the way with two hits. Evan Derosby made his varsity debut on the mound (7 innings). Beverly is now 2-3.Peabody 4, Classical 0At Peabody, Peabody pitcher Patrick Ruotolo silenced the Classical offense. Ruotolo pitched a complete game, a four-hit shutout (7 innings, 11 strikeouts, 1 walk). Peabody (5-2) received most of its offense in the first inning, with a three-run home run from George Tsonis (2-3). Peabody added its fourth run in the fifth inning from a Bobby Losanno RBI double (3-3, 1 run scored). Steve Girolamo had a strong performance (3-3, 1 run scored). For Classical, Kyle Gauthier pitched well in the loss (6 innings, 2 strikeouts, 1 walk, 8 hits, 4 runs, 1 earned run). Kyle Devin (2-2) and Jorge Perez (1-2) led the way for the Rams’ offense. Classical is now 3-2.St. Mary’s 6, Lowell Catholic 2At Fraser Field, St. Mary’s found itself down 1-0 after the first inning. St. Mary’s was down 1-0 going into the fifth inning. St. Mary’s went off for a five-run fifth to help put the game away. St. Mary’s pitcher Kurtis White surrendered one early run, but shut down the Lowell Catholic offense after the first inning (7 innings, 4 hits, 14 strikeouts, 2 runs, 1 earned). Leading the Spartan offense were Chris Butler (2-2, 1 RBI), Brandon Mageary (1-3, 2 RBI) and Jonathan Capano (1-3, 1 RBI). St. Mary’s is now 2-2.Swampscott 4, Gloucester 0At Swampscott, Swampscott was up 4-0 after the third inning, and that was all pitcher Nick Meninno required. Meninno dominated the Gloucester bats all afternoon (7 innings, 3 hits, 8 strikeouts, 0 walks, 0 runs). Leading the Big Blue offense were Mike Walsh (single, 2 RBI), Frank Legere (3 hits, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base) and Trevor Massey (2 hits, 1 run scored). Swampscott is 3-2.Danvers 8, Saugus 6At Danvers, the Falcons only scrapped three hits total as a team, but earned 10 walks. Danvers (5-1) was up 7-6 after the fourth inning, and shut down the Saugus offense from that point on. Danvers reliever Brandon Hyde recorded his first-ever varsity win out of the bullpen (3 innings, 3 hits, 0 walks). Scott Hovey led the Falcon offense (double, sac fly, 3 RBI). For Saugus, Steve Blaney had a strong performance (2 doubles, 2 RBI). Tom Trainor and Dante Deltoro had one double each.Marblehead 14, Winthrop 0At Seaside Park, the Magicians scored 14 runs on 11 hits to improve to 2-3. Senior catcher Colton Dana (3-for-3, triple, 3 runs, 4 RBI); Will Quigley (3-for-3, 3 runs, 3 RBI); Eric Lundgren (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and Evan Hafferman (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI) led the offensive assault. Casey Stead walked three times and reached on an error and scored four times. Senior Max Hall struck out five, walked one and allowed two hits for the win.Salem 9, Revere 2At Revere, Salem was up 5-2 in the top of the seventh. The Witches added four insurance runs in the seventh to help put away the Patriots. Salem senior pitcher Louis Baez pitched in his first game in over a year due to injury (7 innings, 6 strikeouts, 2 walks, 2 runs). Chris Boucher led the Salem attack (3-4, 4 RBI). Jehnsy Trontoso, Ellin Vasquez and Adam Maggiacomo all had two hits each for the Witches (4-1).North Andover 10, Fenwick 2At Fenwick, Fenwick pitcher Ken Church had a tough time dealing with the returning Eastern Mass. champs (5 innings, 7 runs, 6 strikeouts).
