SAUGUS – More than 30 people gathered at World Series Park in Saugus Wednesday evening for the dedication of the newest addition to the area: the DiChiara Pavilion.?Today marks the culmination of a lot of work and the generous donations of a lot of people to make this very functional building possible,” said World Series Park creator Bob Davis. “This structure compliments this baseball field by providing a place to get out of the weather, whether it be drizzle or heat, and also provides an area where people can sit down and have something to eat and watch the baseball games.”The 20-foot by 40-foot pavilion features six picnic tables on a concrete slab with a full roof and 12 steel columns, and is located behind home plate and next to the concession stand.Davis said he first got the idea to build the pavilion when he and his wife and grandson visited a park in New Hampshire with a similar pavilion.?It was a very hot day and we walked underneath it and I swear the temperature dropped about 20 degrees,” said Davis. “I said to my wife Carolyn, ?We gotta have this at World Series Park.”From there Davis reached out to several local residents and businesses for help, including Steve Rich, who helped design it, Aggregate Industries, which provided crushed rock for the foundation, Cooper Bros. Paving, Sachem Sign Works, Bay State Galvanizing, Peter Andruwchow, who provided the 12 steel columns, and DiChiara and Sons construction, which the pavilion is named after.?It?s a great Saugus company that does a lot of work in Saugus and has been very generous,” said Davis. “I said ?I?d like you to build it and I?ll tell you what, I?ll call it DiChiara Pavilion in your honor for doing that.? We feel very blessed to have you step up, and give your time and talent and materials to make this pavilion become a reality.”Joe DiChiara, who owns DiChiara and Sons with his brother Michael, thanked everyone who helped build the pavilion.?It was a handful of people, we all came down in the middle of the winter for a few weekends and got it done and had a good time doing it,” said DiChiara.Town Manager Scott Crabtree said the pavilion was a great example of volunteerism and a commitment to Saugus.?I think everybody?s dedication to the town and their commitment here makes everything possible,” said Crabtree. “Without the leadership of Bob Davis ? it wouldn?t be possible.”Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
