Home runs launch English softball past Salem

The English High softball team had a power surge Thursday with four different players hitting home runs in a 23-7 win over Salem at English.”My team played very well today on offense and defense. The offense was especially phenomenal today,” English coach Alisa Fila said.Shanna Zeramby (3-run home run), Samantha Holey (2-run home run) and Brianna Maynard (2-run home run) all took Salem pitching deep in the bottom of the second inning. Taylor Newhall topped things off with a grand slam in the sixth inning.Zeramby had a strong all around game (3-3, triple, HR, 4 RBI). Brooke Holey made her varsity debut on the mound (6 1/3 innings, 2 walks, 6 hits, 6 strikeouts). English is now 3-1.Shawsheen 12, Tech 0At Tech, Tech dug itself a big early deficit and could never recover. Samantha Oliva had a strong day at the plate for Tech (2 hits). Ryce Colon had a strong effort on the mound and Rallanny Diaz had a strong performance patrolling third base. Tech is now 1-3.Winthrop 2, Boston Latin Academy 0At Winthrop, Alex Ferri pitched a no-hitter and her defense didn’t make an error as the Vikings won the Battle of the Beach softball tournament for the third time in four attempts. Ferri (10 strikeouts, 2 walks) got some help from her defense in the first inning. After walking the leadoff hitter, the next girl popped up a bunt attempt and third baseman Brittiny Linto caught the ball and caught the runner off base for the double play.Winthrop got its first in the first inning when Jen Adamson tried to stretch a single and the ball got away from the second baseman. An overthrow to third allowed Adamson to score. The Vikings scored again in the second inning when Michelle Lasala got into a rundown between first and second enabling Rachel Delsolio to score from third. Winthrop is 3-3.Revere 7, Medford 3At Medford, the Patriots (4-3) got another solid pitching performance from Sabrina Palermo, who struck out eight and allowed three earned runs. Lindsey Gurska had a two-run double to help the cause offensively.
